Sangli (ISO 15919, ISO: ''Sāṁgalī''; ) is a metropolitan town and the headquarters of Sangli District in Maharashtra, in south-western India. It has earned the nickname "Turmeric City of India" for being the hub of the Asia's largest production and trade of this spice. Sangli is situated on the banks of river Krishna and houses many Sugar refinery, sugar factories. A significant city in South-Western India, it lies 376 km from Mumbai, 230 km from Pune and 638 km from Bangalore. The city has a significant healthcare hub, including its twin City Miraj. Vishal Prakashbapu Patil is an Indian politician and Lok Sabha MP representing Sangli since 2024. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and was elected as an Independent from Sangli. Personal life Patil is the grandson of former Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil. He is the son of former MP Prakashbapu Vasantdada Patil and Mahila Pradesh Congress leader Shailja Patil, while former Union Minister of State for Coal Pratik Prakashbapu Patil is his elder brother. Miraj (Pronunciation: iɾəd͡z ) is a city that is part of the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad metropolitan region in Sangli district, Maharashtra. Founded in the early 10th century, Miraj was an important jagir of the Bijapur Sultanate. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, stayed in Miraj for two months during his south India campaign. Because of its location, Miraj has been held as a strategic bastion.
