Sandia High School
Sandia High School (SHS) is a public high school located in the northeast heights of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a member of the Albuquerque Public Schools district. The current enrollment is 1,776. __TOC__ History The school opened in 1958 and was originally constructed to hold between 1,800 and 2,000 students at a cost of $1.3 million. The smaller Yucca school, located east of the main building, was completed in 1959 to house elementary students. The Yucca school was phased out as an elementary school in 1974 due to low enrollment, and was used as an annex to Sandia. The originally proposed mascot name was the Sandia Satans, which prompted negative reactions from the community. Thereafter, the mascot name was changed to Matadors, after a vote which included Thunderbirds and Road Runners. A Matador sculpture was placed in the student commons area in 1979. The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame is a sports hall of fame in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The hall's mission statement states its purpose is "To induct into the Hall of Fame those athletes, coaches, teams or any other individuals who have had significant careers, achieving high standards of athletic success and/or made contributions to sports, thereby bestowing fame and honor to the state of New Mexico. It was first founded in 1973 as the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame, and honored those from the Albuquerque region until expanding in 2005 to include other areas of the state. Brendan Kevin Donnelly (born July 4, 1971) is an American former Major League Baseball relief pitcher. A right-hander, Donnelly pitched for twenty-one teams (two of them independents), twelve organizations, two independent leagues, eleven organized minor leagues, and both the American League and the National League.
