San Patricio is a city in San Patricio County in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 384 at the 2020 census. In the 2000 U.S. Census, a portion of San Patricio was indicated as being in Nueces County. As of the 1990 U.S. Census, the 2010 U.S. Census, and the 2020 U.S. Census, that particular area is indicated as being in San Patricio County. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, San Patricio, located at (27.959196, -97.773134), has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10.0 km), of which 3.8 square miles (9.9 km) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km) (1.03%) is water. History The town was founded in 1829 by empresarios James McGloin and John McMullen. Matamoros, officially known as Heroica Matamoros, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and the municipal seat of the homonymous municipality. James Grant (1793–1836) was a 19th-century Texas politician, physician and military participant in the Texas Revolution. Early life James Grant was born on July 28, 1793, in Ross-shire, Scotland, son of William Grant. His paternal grandfather, Alexander Grant, was a veteran of the Battle of Culloden of 1746 who later became a director of the East India Company and was the last man to escape from the Black Hole of Calcutta.Reid (2007), p. 13. Consultation (Texas)
The Consultation, also known as the Texian Government, served as the provisional government of Mexican Texas from October 1835 to March 1836 during the Texas Revolution. Tensions rose in Texas during early 1835 as throughout Mexico federalism, federalists began to oppose the increasingly centralized government, centralist policies of the government. In the summer, Texians elected delegates to a political convention to be held in Gonzales, Texas, Gonzales in mid-October. Weeks before the convention and war began, the Texian Militia took up arms against Mexican soldiers at the Battle of Gonzales. The convention was postponed until November 1 after many of the delegates joined the newly organized volunteer Texan Army, Texian Army to initiate a siege of Bexar, siege of the Mexican garrison at San Antonio de Bexar. Texas Revolution
The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836) was a rebellion of colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Hispanic Texans) against the Centralist Republic of Mexico, centralist government of Mexico in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Although the uprising was part of a larger one, the Revolts against the Centralist Republic of Mexico, Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with the goal of annexation. The Mexican Congress passed the Tornel Decree, declaring that any foreigners fighting against Mexican troops "will be deemed pirates and dealt with as such, being citizens of no nation presently at war with the Republic and fighting under no recognized flag". Battle Of San Patricio
The Battle of San Patricio was fought on February 27, 1836, between Texian rebels and the Mexican army, during the Texas Revolution. The battle occurred as a result of the outgrowth of the Texian Matamoros Expedition. The battle marked the start of the Goliad Campaign, the Mexican offensive to retake the Texas Gulf Coast. It took place in and around San Patricio. By the end of 1835, all Mexican troops had been driven from Texas. Frank W. Johnson, the commander of the volunteer army in Texas, and James Grant gathered volunteers for a planned invasion of the Mexican port town of Matamoros. In February 1836, Johnson and about 40 men led a herd of horses to San Patricio in preparation for the expedition. James Power (empresario)
James Power (1788 or 1789 – August 15, 1852) was an Irish-born Texan empresario, politician and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, known for the land grant he received with partner James Hewetson that included the coastal area between the mouths of the Guadalupe River (Texas), Guadalupe and Nueces Rivers, as well as his founding and service as the first mayor of the Aransas City, Texas, Aransas City settlement. He often represented Refugio County, Texas, Refugio County during statewide conventions.
