It is best known for housing the ''Camera di San Paolo'' (Chamber of St Paul), decorated by a masterpiece of fresco work (1519) by Antonio Correggio, Correggio. History Tradition holds that the monastery was erected on the spot where Godescalco, the son-in-law of the Lombard king Agilulf, converted to Christianity and took the name Paolo. Supposedly he endowed the convent after his young wife had died during childbirth between 599 and 602. However, documents speak of a Benedictine convent, one of nearly a handful in Parma, present around the year 1000, and it was adjacent to the former and contemporary church of San Ludovico, now also deconsecrated. Luigi Marchesi (; 8 August 1754 – 14 December 1829) was an Italian castrato singer, one of the most prominent and charismatic to appear in Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century. His singing was praised by the likes of Mozart and Napoleon. Biography Luigi Ludovico Marchesi was born in Milan. He joined the Milan Cathedral choir in 1765 and made his operatic debut in Rome in 1773 at the Teatro delle Dame, cast as a female character, in Marcello da Capua's comic opera ''La contessina''. Alberto Pasini
Alberto Pasini (3 September 1826 – 15 December 1899) was an Italian painter. He is best known for depicting Orientalism, Orientalist subjects in a late-Romanticism, Romantic style. Biography He was born in Busseto. His father was a commissioner for his district, a post analogous to a sub-prefect. After the death of his father in 1828, he and his mother moved to Parma, where Pasini enrolled, at the age of 17 years, in the Academy of Fine Art of Parma. He studied landscape painting and drawing. In Parma, he was helped early on by Alberto's uncle, the painter and manuscript illuminator, Antonio Pasini, who painted for the local nobility and collaborated with the publishing house established by Giovanni Battista Bodoni. By 1852, he exhibited a series of thirty designs, made into lithographs, depicting various castles around Piacenza, Lunigiana and Parma. Amedeo Bocchi
Amedeo Bocchi (August 24, 1883 – December 16, 1976) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born on August 24, 1883, in Parma, to a father who worked in painting wall decorations. At the age of 12 years, he was enrolled in the Royal Institute of Fine Arts of Parma, under the direction of Cecrope Barilli. In 1901, at the age of 18 years he was graduated, and Barili prompted him to travel to Rome to the Scuola del Nudo on Via Ripetta. In Rome he married, and in 1908 his only daughter Bianca was born, but his wife Rita died the next year. His daughter was to be a frequent object of his paintings until her untimely death in 1934. In 1919, Bocchi remarried a model for his paintings, but she died four years later. In 1910, he submitted two paintings to the Biennale in Venice. Ilario Spolverini
Ilario Spolverini (1657–1734), known as Spolverini, was an Italian painter. Biography Spolverini was born in Parma. The influence of Mercanti’s master Francesco Monti (il Brescianino), Francesco Monti, known as Brescianino, is evident in his choice of subjects, including the battles, knights and scenes characterised by movement. After a trip to Venice together with Brescianino, his painting displayed a new approach to colour that made it fully original. His work for various noble families in the area of Parma and Piacenza included a series of paintings celebrating the deeds of the Farnese dynasty commissioned by the family in 1714 and repeated three times for residences in Parma, Piacenza and Colorno. Spolverini painted battle scenes for the Duke. His religious artwork was placed in the Certosa and the Cathedral of Parma.
