San Marco, Milan
San Marco is a church in Milan, northern Italy. History According to tradition, the church was dedicated to St. Mark, patron of Venice, after the help given by that city in the war against Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century. However, the first mention of the church dates from 1254 when the Augustinians built a Gothic style edifice with a nave and two aisles re-using pre-existing constructions. The area of present Via San Marco contained a basin (artificial lake) called ''Laghetto di San Marco'' which connected to various canals (navigli); the basin was filled in the 1930s, and the area now sports a frequent outdoor market. The structure was heavily modified in the Baroque style during the 17th century, when it became the largest church in the city after the Duomo di Milano. Carlo Maciachini
Carlo Francesco Maciachini (; sometimes spelled Maciacchini; 2 April 1818 – 10 June 1899) was an Italian architect and restorer. Born near Varese, he studied in Milan, where he also realized some of his most important works, most notably the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, Monumental Cemetery (1866). Other notable works of Maciachini are restorations of historic churches in several cities of northern Italy. Along with Camillo Boito, Luca Beltrami, and Luigi Broggi, Maciachini is one of the prominent representatives of the eclecticism in art, eclectic period of Milanese architecture, sometimes referred to as "Milanese Eclecticism" (approx. 1860–1920). Giovanni Battista Crespi
Giovanni Battista Crespi (23 December 1573 – 23 October 1632), called Il Cerano, was an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect. Biography He was born in Romagnano Sesia, the son of a painter, Raffaele Crespi, and moved to Cerano with his family some years later. In 1591 he is known to have been living in Milan. True to the Counter-Reformation piety zealously expressed in Milanese art of his time, his paintings focus on mysteries and mystical episodes in saintly life. The crowded canvases and the angles recall Mannerism, but his paintings show an emotion that evokes common sentiments in Baroque art. He has been posthumously referred to as the ''Vasari of Lombardy'', for his prolific Mannerist fresco decoration. Giovanni Visconti, Archbishop Of Milan
Giovanni Visconti (1290–1354) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal, who was co-ruler in Milan and lord of other Italian cities. He also was a military leader who fought against Florence, and used force to capture and hold other cities. Biography He was the son of Matteo I Visconti and Bonacossa Borri. Giovanni Visconti was elected archbishop by the Capitol of Milan in 1317, but Pope John XXII refused to confirm the election and instead raised Aicardus from Comodeia to that position. In 1323 John excommunicated him with an accusation of heresy, and Visconti found an ally in the antipope Nicholas V, who give him the title of cardinal. In 1331 he became bishop and lord of Novara, and in 1339, after Aicardus' death, he triumphantly entered Milan, although Pope Clement VI only issued a bull confirming him in the archbishopric in 1342. Anovelo Da Imbonate
Anovelo da Imbonate was an Italian painter and manuscript illuminator of the 14th and 15th century, active in a Gothic style in Milan. Little is known about his biography. He was likely born near Como, Italy. He signed the illuminated ''Messale dell'Incoronazione'' (Coronation Missal, circa 1395) found in the Basilica of San Ambrogio belonging to Gian Galeazzo Visconti. A second work is the ''Messale di Santa Tecla'' (1402). Gian Paolo Lomazzo (26 April 1538 – 27 January 1592; his first name is sometimes also given as "Giovan" or "Giovanni") was an Italians, Italian artist and writer on art. Angelo Inganni
Angelo Inganni (November 24, 1807 – December 2, 1880) was an Italian painter. Biography Born in Brescia, Inganni was taught the basics of art by his father Giovanni and his elder brother Francesco, with whom he worked on fresco decorations from when he was young. Distinguished during his military service as a draughtsman and portraitist, he was noticed by Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, Marshal Radetzky who had him admitted to the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1833. The work he presented regularly at the Brera exhibitions from 1834 to 1859 constitutes a vast series of urban views of Milan capturing all the details of its architecture and including likenesses of real people.
