Unione Calcio Sampdoria, commonly referred to as Sampdoria (), is an Italian professional football club based in Genoa. The club was formed in 1946 from the merger of two existing sports clubs whose roots can be traced back to the 1890s, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Both the team name and colours reflect this union, the first being a combination of the names, the second taking the form of a unique kit design, predominantly blue (for Andrea Doria) with white, red and black bands (for Sampierdarenese) across the centre of the shirt, hence the nickname ''blucerchiati'' ("blue-circled"). Sampdoria play at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, capacity 36,536, which it shares with Genoa's other club, Genoa Cricket and Football Club. Derby Della Lanterna
The Derby della Lanterna, Italian for the "Derby of the Lantern", is Genoa's local derby, played by Genoa C.F.C and U.C. Sampdoria. It takes place at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which both clubs share. Background The derby's name is derived from the Torre della Lanterna, the ancient landmark and the main lighthouse for the city's port. The rivalry is fueled by the fact that Genoa has a long history, being Italy's oldest football club, while Sampdoria is the country's newer continuously operating club. It is the oldest derby in Italian football with the first match being played in 1902, when Sampdoria were known as Andrea Doria. 49 matches were played in total between Genoa and this incarnation of Sampdoria, with the former emerging with 30 victories in all competitions, with only eight wins for Andrea Doria. 1990–91 Serie A
The 1990-91 season saw Sampdoria win the Serie A title for the first time in their history, finishing five points ahead of second placed Milan. Third placed Internazionale were victorious in the UEFA Cup, with ninth-placed Roma compensating for their sub-standard league season with glory in the Coppa Italia, while Juventus's seventh-placed finish meant that they would be without European action for the first season in three decades. Lecce, Pisa, Cesena and Bologna were all relegated. A notable record was set on 9 December 1990 in a Serie A fixture, when Bologna player Giuseppe Lorenzo was sent off after just 10 seconds for striking an opponent in the match against Parma. The Serie A (), also called Serie A TIM for national sponsorship with TIM, is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system and the winner is awarded the Scudetto and the Coppa Campioni d'Italia. Dejan Stanković
Dejan Stanković ( sr-Cyrl, Дејан Станковић, , born 11 September 1978) is a Serbian professional manager and former player. He currently manages Italian club Sampdoria. He captained the Serbia national team from 2007 until 2011, when he announced his retirement from international football. Stanković began his career at Red Star Belgrade, before joining Lazio in 1998. He spent more than five years with the latter club before joining Inter Milan, where he remained until his retirement in 2013. Stnanković is renowned for being the only man to represent three differently named nations at FIFA World Cups – Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Serbia. Coppa Italia
The ("Italy Cup") is an annual knockout cup competition in Italian football organized by the FIGC until the 2009–10 season and the Lega Serie A ever since. History The beginning of the tournament was turbulent, due to the complexity of the participation of the teams in the tournament, since its inception in 1921, the Italian championship was divided into two groups. On the one hand the CCI Championship (Italian Football Confederation) and on the other the FIGC championship (Italian Football Federation). These two championships were not organized between them, so they could not manage the dates that allowed the normal course of the tournament. The tournament's first edition held in 1922 was won by F.C. Vado. The second edition, scheduled in the 1926–27 season, was cancelled during the round of 32. Marco Lanna
Marco Lanna (; born 13 July 1968) is an Italian former professional footballer who played at both club and international levels as a defender. He is the current chairman of Sampdoria. Playing career Born in Genoa, Lanna began his career with Sampdoria, moving to Roma with a four-year agreement for 800 million lire per year. He left the club at the end of his contract and joined Spanish club Salamanca as free agent, and, after two further years, he moved to Real Zaragoza. He earned two caps for Italy between 1992 and 1993, including in one FIFA World Cup qualifier. Later career In August 2011 Lanna was appointed director of football of Piacenza. He left the club in January 2012.
