Sam Roberts (born June 20, 1947) is an American journalist who has written for ''The New York Times'' since 1983, serving as Urban Affairs Correspondent from 2005 to 2015. He now serves as an obituaries writer. He is also host of a weekly television news talk show ''NY1#The_New_York_Times_Close_Up, The New York Times Close Up'' on CUNY TV. Career Roberts graduated from Cornell University in 1968, where he was managing editor of ''The Cornell Daily Sun'' and a member of the Quill and Dagger society. He was city editor at the ''New York Daily News'' from 1977 to 1981 and political editor from 1981 to 1983, when he joined ''The New York Times''. Personal life Roberts is married and lives in New York City. He has two sons. Samuel Roberts (mathematician)
Samuel Roberts FRS (15 December 1827, in Horncastle, Lincolnshire – 18 September 1913, in London) was a British mathematician. Roberts studied at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Horncastle. He matriculated in 1845 at the University of London, where he earned in 1847 his bachelor's degree in mathematics and in 1849 his master's degree in mathematics and physics, as first in his class. Next he studied law and became a solicitor in 1853. After a few years of law practice he abandoned his law career and returned to mathematics, although he never had an academic position. He had his first mathematical paper published in 1848. In 1865 he was an important participant in the founding of the London Mathematical Society (LMS). From 1866 to 1892 he acted as legal counsel for LMS, from 1872 to 1880 he was the organization's treasurer, and from 1880 to 1882 its president. In 1896 he received the De Morgan Medal of the LMS. Samuel Roberts (Welsh Writer)
Samuel Roberts (6 March 1800 – 24 September 1885), or simply S.R., was a Welsh minister, known also as a political and economic writer. He was involved in an attempt to set up a Welsh colony in Tennessee, but this was disrupted by the American Civil War. Early life He was the eldest son of the minister John Roberts, born on 6 March 1800 at the chapel-house, Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire. He was taught until he was ten by his father, and subsequently at a school at Shrewsbury, after which he worked on his father's farm, and acquired a knowledge of shorthand. After preaching for his father's church around 1819, Roberts went to the dissenting academy kept by George Lewis (1763–1822), first at Llanfyllin, and later at Newtown, where he remained for six years. In April 1826 he was invited to become assistant pastor to his father, and was ordained 15 August 1827. He succeeded in 1834 to the sole charge of the church, together with eight chapels of ease. HMS ''Starr'' was a 16-gun ''Merlin''-class ship sloop of the Royal Navy. She was built by Tanner, of Dartmouth, to plans by Sir William Rule, and launched in July 1805. As a sloop she served on convoy duty, though she also participated in the invasion of Martinique in early 1809. She was rebuilt as a bomb vessel in May 1812 and renamed ''Meteor''. As ''Meteor'' she served in the Baltic and then off the United States, participating in attacks on up the Potomac and on Baltimore and New Orleans. She was sold in October 1816. Samuel Roberts (Sheffield Writer)
Samuel Roberts, a Sheffield cutler, author and supporter of benevolent causes, was born in the city on 18 April 1763. He died there at the age of 85 on 24 July 1848 and was buried in Anston churchyard. Life Samuel Roberts was the second son of the similarly named Sheffield manufacturer and merchant, Samuel Roberts (1732–1799), by his wife Mary Sykes. At the age of fourteen he entered his father's business of silver and plated goods, remaining there until 1784, when he established a firm of his own with fellow apprentice George Cadman (1760–1823). The business prospered and by 1841 had a London showroom at Duke Street, Adelphi, London, Adelphi. Regarded as one of the ablest manufacturers in Sheffield, Roberts also registered a string of patents for his various innovations.
