Sam McGredy
Sam McGredy refers to four generations of Northern Ireland, Northern Irish rose hybridizers. Sam McGredy I founded the family nursery in 1880. Sam McGredy II focused the nursery on roses in 1895. Sam McGredy III took over in 1926, and was the first to name roses after family members. Sam McGredy IV moved operations to New Zealand in 1974 after a close friend was murdered by Loyalist paramilitaries during The Troubles, and focused on Floribundas, Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras, including 'Paddy Stephens', 'New Zealand', and 'Kathryn McGredy'; and the hand-painted roses such as 'Regensberg'. The stock parents of this rose are the hybrid musk, ''Rosa'' 'Seaspray' and the floribunda, ''Rosa'' 'Dreaming'. Description 'Sexy Rexy' is a compact, upright shrub, 2 to 3 ft (60—90 cm) in height with a 2 to 3 ft (60—91 cm) spread. Blooms are medium, with an average diameter of 2—3 in (5—7 cm), with 39 to 51 petals. Flowers are a medium pink and have a mild fragrance. The cultivar was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1984, and the recipient of the Portland Gold Medal in 1995. Description 'Olympiad' is a medium-tall, upright shrub, 3 to 5 ft (60–121 cm) in height with a 2 to 3 ft (60–91 cm) spread. Blooms are medium-large, with an average diameter of 4—5 in (10–12 cm), with 32 to 37 petals. Flowers are a dark red and have a mild tea fragrance. The Royal National Rose Society (RNRS) (1876–2017) was a specialist horticultural organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to the cultivation and appreciation of roses. Founded in 1876 as the "National Rose Society", it was the world's oldest plant society. It was a membership organisation, with members drawn from professional and amateur gardeners and horticultural businesses.
