Salford City F.C.
Salford City Football Club is a professional association football club in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. The club competes in League Two, the fourth level of the English football league system. The club was founded as Salford Central in 1940, and played minor local league football until winning a place in the Manchester League in 1963. Salford were winners of the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1971, 1973, and 1975 and the Manchester Premier Cup in 1978 and 1979. The club joined the Cheshire County League in 1980, which amalgamated into the North West Counties Football League (NWCFL) two years later. They changed their name again in 1989, to Salford City, and secured promotion into the Northern Premier League (NPL) in 2008. The club survived in the league on the final day of the following season, an achievement known in club folklore as The Great Escape. Moor Lane
Moor Lane, currently known as the Peninsula Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in the area of Kersal, Salford, Greater Manchester, England, and is the current home ground of Salford City Football Club since its opening in 1978. It has a current capacity of 5,108, following its last expansion in 2017. History Salford City moved to Moor Lane in 1978, but it had been a venue for other sports for many years before; Manchester Rugby Club played there from 1908 until 1969. In 2016, renovation work began, which saw its capacity rise from 1,600 to 5,108, including 2,246 seats. In 2017, the renovated stadium was reopened by Alex Ferguson, with Peninsula Business Services as sponsors. Ryan Giggs
Ryan Joseph Giggs (né Wilson; born 29 November 1973) is a Welsh football coach, former player and co-owner of Salford City. Maine Road
Maine Road was a football stadium in Moss Side, Manchester, England, that was home to Manchester City from 1923 to 2003. It hosted FA Cup semi-finals, the Charity Shield, a League Cup final and England matches. Maine Road's highest attendance of 84,569 was set in 1934 at an FA Cup sixth round match between Manchester City and Stoke City, a record for an English club ground. At the time of its closure in 2003, Maine Road was an all-seater stadium with a capacity of 35,150 and of haphazard design with stands of varying heights due to the ground being renovated several times over its 80-year history. Old Trafford () is a football stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, and is the home of Manchester United. Ewan MacColl
James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 – 22 October 1989), better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a British folk singer-songwriter, folk song collector, labour activist and actor. Born in England to Scottish parents, he is known as one of the instigators of the 1960s folk revival as well as for writing such songs as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and " Dirty Old Town". "Dirty Old Town" is a song written by Ewan MacColl in 1949 that was made popular by the Dubliners and the Pogues. History The song was written about Salford, then in Lancashire, England, the area where MacColl was born and brought up. It was originally composed for the 1949 play ''Landscape with Chimneys'', produced by Joan Littlewood and Theatre Workshop and set in a North of England industrial town. With the growing popularity of folk music in the 1960s the song became a standard in the repertory of British folk club singers. The Pogues are an English Celtic punk band founded in King's Cross, London, in 1982, by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy and Jem Finer.
