Salem Fields Cemetery, Brooklyn
Salem Fields Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery located at 775 Jamaica Avenue in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, United States, within the Cemetery Belt. It was founded in 1852 by Congregation Emanu-El of New York. Salem Fields is the final resting place for many of the prominent German-Jewish families of New York City. Among those buried in the cemetery are members of the Fox family, founders of Fox Film; the Guggenheim family, who were involved in mining, newspapers, and Guggenheim museums; the Lewisohn family, who were involved in mining, banking, and philanthropy; and the Shubert family, which led a large theatrical empire. Architectural historian Fredric Bedoire, Professor at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Stockholm, compared the "beautiful" Salem Fields to the architecturally notable mausoleums and undulating landscape of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Richard James Horatio Gottheil (13 October 1862 – 22 May 1936) was an English Americans, English American Semitic studies, Semitic scholar, Zionist, founding father of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, and one of the founders of the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. Biography He was born in Manchester, England, but moved to the United States at age 11 when his father, Gustav Gottheil, accepted a position as the assistant Rabbi of the largest Reform Judaism, Reform synagogue in New York City, New York, Congregation Emanu-El of New York, Temple Emanu-El. He graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University, Columbia College in 1881, and studied also in Europe, earning his doctorate at the University of Leipzig in 1886. Marcus Goldman (born Marcus Goldmann; December 9, 1821 – July 20, 1904) was a German American investment banker, businessman, and financier. He was the founder of Goldman Sachs, which has since become one of the world's largest investment banks. Early life Mark Goldman was born on December 9, 1821, in Trappstadt, Kingdom of Bavaria, to an Ashkenazim, Ashkenazi Jewish family. His father, Wolf Goldman, was a farmer and cattle dealer. The Fox Film Corporation (also known as Fox Studios) was an American independent company that produced motion pictures and was formed in 1914 by the theater "chain" pioneer William Fox (producer), William Fox. It was the corporate successor to his earlier Greater New York Film Rental Company and Box Office Attraction Company (founded 1913). Wilhelm Fried Fuchs (; January 1, 1879 – May 8, 1952), commonly known as William Fox, was a Hungarian Americans, Hungarian-American film industry executive who founded the Fox Film, Fox Film Corporation in 1915 and the Fox Theatres, Fox West Coast Theatres chain in the 1920s. Although he lost control of his film businesses in 1930, his name was used by 20th Century Fox (now part of the Walt Disney Company) and continues to be used in the trademarks of the present-day Fox Corporation, including the Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox News, Fox Sports and Foxtel. Raphael Benjamin (June 19, 1846 – November 15, 1906) was an English-born rabbi who ministered in Australia and America. Life Benjamin was born on June 19, 1846, in London, England, the son of Elias Benjamin and Mary Lazarus. Benjamin attended the Jews' Free School, then headed by Moses Angel, as well as its Talmud Torah under Myer D. Davis and Rabbi George J. Emanuel. In 1860, he won the Jews' Commemoration Scholarship. He was appointed pupil teacher in the school while still studying Hebrew and pedagogy. He obtained his teacher's certificate in 1868, and three years later he received a B.A. from the University of London. In 1874, he was ordained a rabbi by Chief Rabbi of Great Britain Nathan M. The Cemetery of the Evergreens, also called The Evergreens Cemetery, is a non-denominational rural cemetery along the Cemetery Belt in Brooklyn and Queens, New York City. It was incorporated in 1849, not long after the passage of New York's Rural Cemetery Act spurred development of cemeteries outside Manhattan.
