Sailing At The 1968 Summer Olympics – Dragon
The Dragon (keelboat), Dragon was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1968 Summer Olympics program in Acapulco. Seven races were scheduled. 71 sailors, on 23 boats, from 23 nations competed. Axel May (born 13 August 1948 is a sailor from the West-Germany, who represented his country at three Olympic Games. The first time was the 1968 Summer Olympics in Acapulco, Mexico as crew member in the Dragon Class. With helmsman Klaus Oldendorff and fellow crew member Peter Stülcken they took the 7th place. The second appearance was the 1976 Summer Olympics in Kingston, Ontario, Canada as crew member in the Soling. With helmsman Willi Kuhweide and fellow crew member Karsten Meyer they took the 5th place. Pelle Helmer Petterson (born 31 July 1932) is a Swedish sailor and yacht designer. Petterson has won two Olympic medals, four world championship titles, challenged for the America's Cup and designed several sailboats, including Maxi 77. Biography Early life Pelle Petterson was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 31 July 1932 to Helmer Petterson and Norwegian-born Borgny Petterson (born Holm). His father was also a designer who developed wood gas aggregates and Volvo PV444, strongly influencing his son to go in his footsteps. In his youth, Petterson built gravity racers and sailed in the Stjärnbåt class. Design career Petterson studied at the Pratt Institute in New York from 1955 to 1957. Thomas James Anderson (24 July 1939 – 28 July 2010) was an Australian sailor and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where he received a gold medal in the dragon class, together with crew members John Cuneo and John Shaw. He was the twin brother of John Anderson. On 8 February 2000, Anderson was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his gold medal-winning performance at 1972 Summer Olympics.
