Sabha Airbase
Sabha Airbase (also called Tamanhent Airbase) is a Libyan Air Force (1951–2011), Libyan Air Force base southeast of Sabha, Libya. The airport shares its runway with Sabha Airport. History The airbase used to support the Tupolev Tu-22 bomber, these have been non-operational since at least 1992. Current use Military The base is home to the 1st and 1025th Squadrons of Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 fighter aircraft. It was bombed by coalition aircraft during the 2011 Libyan civil war. Expansion Google Earth shows the construction of 36 aircraft Revetment (aircraft), revetments in the South East corner. MiG-25 fighter jets are seen on the large rectangular tarmac in the south-west quadrant of the base. Civilian Libyan Airlines currently serves the airport. The Libyan Air Force () is the branch of the Libyan Armed Forces responsible for aerial warfare. In 2010, before the Libyan Civil War, the Libyan Air Force personnel strength was estimated at 18,000, with an inventory of 374 combat-capable aircraft operating from 13 military airbases in Libya. Since the 2011 civil war and the ongoing conflict, multiple factions fighting in Libya are in possession of military aircraft. Sabha, Libya
Sabha or Sebha () is an oasis city in southwestern Libya, approximately south of Tripoli. It was historically the capital of the Fezzan region and the Fezzan-Ghadames Military Territory and is the capital of the Sabha District. Sabha Air Base, south of the city, is a Libyan Air Force installation that is home to multiple MiG-25 aircraft. Sabha was where the erstwhile ruler of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, grew up and received secondary education and where he also later became involved in political activism. After the Libyan Civil War and the resultant instability in the country, Sabha reportedly grew in importance as a slave auctioning town. Sebha International Airport is an airport serving Sabha, capital of the Sabha District of Libya. The airport is southeast of the city. The airport shares its runway with Sabha Airbase, which has operations on the southwest side of the airport. Tupolev Tu-22
The Tupolev Tu-22 ( Air Standardization Coordinating Committee name: Blinder) was the first supersonic bomber to enter production in the Soviet Union. Manufactured by Tupolev, the Tu-22 entered service with Long-Range Aviation and Soviet Naval Aviation in the 1960s. The aircraft was a disappointment, lacking both the speed and range that had been expected. It was also a difficult design to fly and maintain. Revetment (aircraft)
A revetment, in military aviation, is a parking area for one or more aircraft that is surrounded by blast walls on three sides. These walls are as much about protecting neighbouring aircraft as it is to protect the aircraft within the revetment; if a combat aircraft loaded with fuel and munitions was to ignite, a chain reaction might lead to the destruction of its neighbours.
