Sabanetas, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
Sabanetas is a barrio in the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,005. History Sabanetas was in Spain's gazetteers until Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Sabanetas barrio was 1,401. Name Sabanetas Barrio is a coastal rural and riverside barrio, which borders the municipality of Añasco to the north. It derives its name from the plains or savannas found in the northern beaches of Mayagüez, in front of the Mona Channel, and in the vicinity of the mouth of the river now called the Río Grande de Añasco. Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge
The Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge (Spanish: ''Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Desecheo'') is a National Wildlife Refuge in Puerto Rico. It is part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The island of Desecheo is located west of Puerto Rico and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea on the south. The refuge encompasses the entire rugged island. From 1940 to 1952 the island was used as a practice target for aerial bombardment by the US War Department and from 1952 to 1960 Desecheo was used as a survival training area for the U.S. Air Force. Although formerly containing a colony of 15,000 brown boobies and 10,000 red-footed boobies, currently no successful booby breeding is known to occur on the island. 2010 Central American And Caribbean Games
The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games (Spanish: ''XXI Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, Mayagüez 2010'') took place in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, from 18 July 2010 to 1 August 2010. Bid It was understood that Mayagüez was going to be the only city to ask to hold the games, so that there was going to be no need for a vote in the assembly held in Havana, Cuba in 2004. El Mani Pavilion is a pavilion in El Mani, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Prior to the construction of the pavilion, the site had been occupied by a covered basketball court; this was demolished to make way for the new building. Its construction cost $3,500,000. Taíno People
The Taíno are the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, Indigenous peoples of the Greater Antilles and surrounding islands. Desecheo () () is a small uninhabited island of the archipelago of Puerto Rico in the northeast of the Mona Passage; from the municipality of Rincón on the west coast ( Punta Higüero) of the main island of Puerto Rico and northeast of Mona Island. The Río Grande de Añasco is a river in western Puerto Rico.
