Saafir
Reggie Gibson (August 23, 1970 – November 19, 2024), better known as Saafir, was an American rapper, producer, and actor. He was also a member of the rap group Golden State Project (formerly known as Golden State Warriors) with Ras Kass and Xzibit. Life and career Born in Oakland, California, he lived with Tupac Shakur and became a dancer for Digital Underground. In November 1994, Saafir took part in one of the most notorious Bay Area rap battles, when he and members of the Hobo Junction went against Casual and members of the Hieroglyphics Crew. The battle was broadcast live by organizers Sway & King Tech on KMEL's ''The Wake Up Show''. Coverage of the battle in March 1995's issue of ''The Source'' brought national exposure to the Bay Area hip-hop scene. ''Boxcar Sessions'' is the debut studio album by American rapper Saafir. It was released in 1994 via Qwest Records. The recording sessions took place at Pajama Recording Studios in Oakland, California. The production was handled by DJ Jay-Z, J Groove and Big Nose, with Sleuth and Saafir serving as executive producers. It features guest appearances from Big Nous, King Saan, Poke Martian and Rashinel. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' wrote that the album "has promisingly jazz-flecked beats and a pleasant flow, but the rapper’s lyrics are hollow, crude and obnoxious." Production was handled by Shock G, Big Nous, Protest, Six July, Corey "R.I.P." Barker, DJ Clark Kent, J Groove, Nick Wiz, Stevie J, The Glove, Tony Pizarro and Omonte Ward. Casual (rapper)
Jonathan Owens (born December 19, 1973), known by his stage name Casual, is an American rapper, producer, and one of the founding members of the alternative hip hop collective Hieroglyphics. He also reads and has been studying Egyptian Hieroglyphics for many years, makes videos on the subject on his YouTube channel Smash Rockwell as well writing about it on his blog Rap God. As a rapper Casual initially became known for his freestyle battle rhymes in the Bay Area hip hop scene and later developing into a solo artist. He is known for diverse lyrics, a complex multisyllabic East Coast influenced flow but with a distinctive Oakland accent. The recording sessions took place between July 1992 and February 1993 at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, California. Production was handled by Digital Underground inner production team, the D-Flow Production Squad. John R. Austin II (born September 26, 1973), better known by his stage name Ras Kass, is an American rapper. He is a member of the hip hop Supergroup (music), supergroup The Hrsmn, along with Canibus, Killah Priest, and Kurupt in 2014. Digital Underground is an American alternative hip hop group from Oakland, California. Its lineup grows with each album and tour. Digital Underground's leader and mainstay was Gregory "Shock G" Jacobs (also known as Humpty Hump). Shock G formed the group in 1987 with Tampa, Florida, Tampa hip-hop radio deejay Kenneth "Kenny-K" Waters and Jimi "Chopmaster J" Dright of Berkeley, California.
