S20 Expressway (Shanghai)
The Shanghai Outer Ring Expressway (), designated S20, is a ring expressway that surrounds the inner districts of the city of Shanghai, China. The different sections of the road have specific names in relation to the cardinal directions. For instance, the eastern portion of the expressway is named 上海环东一大道 (Huandong Avenue (No. 1), literally ''Eastern Ring No. 1 Avenue''), the western portion of the expressway is named 上海环西一大道 (Huanxi Avenue (No. 1), literally ''Western Ring No. 1 Avenue''), and so on. The S20 expressway crosses the Huangpu River twice. At the southern end, it uses the Xupu Bridge, and at the northern end, it uses the Outer Ring Tunnel. Xupu Bridge
The Xupu Bridge (), is a cable-stayed bridge over the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, so named because it connects the city's Xuhui and Pudong districts. It opened in 1997 and carries 8 lanes of the S20 Outer Ring Expressway. A ring road (also known as circular road, beltline, beltway, circumferential (high)way, loop, bypass or orbital) is a road or a series of connected roads encircling a town, city, or country. The most common purpose of a ring road is to assist in reducing traffic volumes in the urban centre, such as by offering an alternate route around the city for drivers who do not need to stop in the city core. Huangpu River
The Huangpu (), formerly romanized as Whangpoo, is a river flowing north through Shanghai. The Bund and Lujiazui are located along the Huangpu River. The Huangpu is the biggest river in central Shanghai, with the Suzhou Creek being its major tributary. It is on average wide and deep, and divides the city into two regions: Puxi ("west of Huangpu"), the traditional city center, and Pudong ("east of Huangpu"). Inner Ring Road (Shanghai)
Inner Ring Road (), also known as ''Inner Ring Elevated Road'' (), is an elevated expressway loop in the city of Shanghai. It was the first ring road around the city of Shanghai. The Puxi section of the road was completely grade-separated and complete in 1994, while the Pudong section of the road was completely grade-separated in 2009. Before the grade separation in Pudong, the road ran at street level, with traffic lights at intersections. The maximum speed on the expressway is , with two lanes in each direction. Middle Ring Road () is a ring expressway in the city of Shanghai, China. It is the second in a series of four ring expressways around the city of Shanghai. Construction began in April 2003 on the first section of the Middle Ring Road in Yangpu District. The Middle Ring Road crosses the Huangpu River twice, using the Jungong Road Tunnel and the Shangzhong Road Tunnel.
