Russian Hip Hop
Russian hip hop refers to hip hop music recorded in Russia or in the Russian language in former Soviet states like Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Hits by Russian rappers are included in the soundtracks of some PC-games and have formed part of several popular internet memes. Many Russian rap artists have achieved commercial success, including Detsl, Bad Balance, Centr, Kasta, Oxxxymiron and Belarusian artist Seryoga. Especially at the end of the 2010s and the beginning of the 2020s, rap has become a very political form of music in Russia. In this respect, rap could be compared to rock in the 1980s, which gave voice to young people critical of the Soviet system, expressed, for example, by Viktor Tsoi's Khochu peremen ("I want changes"). Joseph Saddler (born January 1, 1958), popularly known by his stage name Grandmaster Flash, is an American DJ and rapper. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of Hip Hop DJing, cutting, scratching and mixing. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first Hip Hop act to be honored. In 2019 he won the Polar Music Prize. On May 21, 2022, he acquired an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from Buffalo State College. Early life, family and education Saddler's family immigrated to the United States from Barbados. Mnogotochie (russian: link=no, Многото́чие; ) is a Russian rap band from Moscow. The band performs in gangsta rap, psychedelic rap, and political rap with elements of Russian chanson and rock. is the unofficial leader of the band and author of its lyrics. In 1999 Mnogotochie performed at ''Rap Music'' 1999, but did not win any prizes. The next year they won the prize at the Micro 2000 fest (Микро 2000) – the same festival where MC L.E. won at the freestyle battle. Although Titomir's style derives from western stars such as MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, as well as C&C Music Factory, he has established his own distinct style as a pop and rap performer as well as a DJ. Malchishnik (russian: Мальчи́шник — ''The Stag Night'') is a sex rap group from Russia who were the first Russian rap artists to gain mainstream popularity during earlier 1990s. History Formation Initially producer and manager Alexey Adamov aimed to form a commercially successful boy band. The group was planned as a Soviet counterpart of then-popular New Kids on The Block. Emphasis was to be made on sweet appearances and flashy costumes. Adamov recruited five young guys for the band from Arbat breakdancers. Original band members included vocalists Kris, Klyopa, Dan (Andrey Kotov), Raf and music producer Mutabor (Pavel Galkin). Adamov then asked Dolphin (Andrey Lisikov), a famed breakdancer, apprentice song-writer and a friend of Dan to write some lyrics for the group. The Sugarhill Gang
The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop trio. Their 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight" was the first rap single to become a top 40 hit on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100; reaching a peak position of number 36 on January 12, 1980. This was the trio's only U.S. hit, though they did have further success in Europe until the mid-1980s. The trio reformed in 1994 and did a world tour in 2016. Formation and early years The members, all from Englewood, New Jersey, consisted of Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson, and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien.
