Rothenburg ob der Tauber () is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. It is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls, the other two being Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl, both also in Bavaria. Rothenburg/Oberlausitz ( Upper Sorbian ''Rózbork'') is a small Lusatian town in eastern Saxony, Germany on the Neisse river on the German-Polish border. It has a population of 4,405 (2020). The town was first mentioned in 1268. In 1815, the town, became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. From 1816 until 1945 it was the seat of the district of Rothenburg (Ob. Laus.) in Prussian Silesia. Localities of Rothenburg are Bremenhain (first mentioned in 1396), Geheege, Lodenau, Neusorge (first mentioned in 1564), Nieder-Neundorf, Steinbach and Uhsmannsdorf (first mentioned in 1388 as "Osansdorf"). The Château de Rothenbourg or Rothenburg Castle (, literally "red castle") is a ruined castle in the ''commune'' of Philippsbourg in the Moselle ''département'' of France. History The castle, built on a hill called ''Rothenberg'' or ''Rodenberg'', to the north of another castle, the Château du Falkenstein, dates back to the 9th century. Around 912, the Bishop of Strasbourg, Otbert, pursued by rebellious subjects, took refuge at ''Rathburg'' which is perhaps Rothenburg, and was assassinated there shortly after. The castle was certainly built by the Duke of Lorraine in the 13th century, and is constructed of dressed sandstone. At the end of the 13th century, it passed to the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch. Czerwieńsk (german: Rothenburg an der Oder) is a town in Zielona Góra County, Lubusz Voivodeship, Poland, with 3,900 inhabitants as of December 2021. Karl Rothenburg (8 June 1894 – 28 June 1941) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He was a recipient of both the Pour le Mérite (of World War I) and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of Nazi Germany. Between wars he served as a commander in the police force, before returning to the Wehrmacht in 1934. During World War II he was the commander of a Panzer Regiment of the 7th Panzer Division. Rothenburg was killed six days into the invasion of the Soviet Union on 28 June 1941 near Minsk, Belarus and was posthumously promoted to Generalmajor.
