Rosa Agrestis
''Rosa agrestis'', the small-leaved sweet briar, field briar or fieldbriar, is a species of wild rose native to Europe, found mostly in southern Europe and occasionally as far as the Caucasus. Sources differ on whether it can be found in northern Africa and Anatolia. A dog rose, it is in the subgenus ''Rosa'', section ''Caninae'', and subsection ''Rubigineae''. It is a close relative of, and very similar to the sweet briar, ''Rosa rubiginosa ''Rosa rubiginosa'' (sweet briar, sweetbriar rose, sweet brier or eglantine; synonym (taxonomy), syn. ''R. eglanteria'') is a species of rose native to Europe and western Asia. Gaetano Savi
Gaetano Savi (13 June 1769 – 28 April 1844) was an Italian naturalist., botanist and mycologist. He was born in Florence and studied with Giorgio Santi (1746–1822) and Adolfo Targioni Tozzetti (1823–1902). In 1798 he published ''Flora Pisana'' (flora of Pisa); in 1801 the first edition of ''Trattato degli alberi della Toscana'' (treatise on the trees of Tuscany); in 1808 ''Botanicon Etruscum'' (botany of Kingdom of Etruria, Etruria); and in 1818 ''Flora Italiana'' (flora of Italy). He taught physics and botany at the University of Pisa and directed the Orto botanico di Pisa, botanical garden there from 1814. In 1816, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Two of his sons also became natural scientists: The geologist and ornithologist Paolo Savi (1798–1871) and the botanist Pietro Savi (1811–1871). Dog Rose
''Rosa canina'', commonly known as the dog rose, is a variable climbing, wild rose species native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia. Description The dog rose is a deciduous shrub normally ranging in height from , though sometimes it can scramble higher into the crowns of taller trees. Its stems are covered with small, sharp, hooked prickles, which aid it in climbing. The leaves are pinnate, with 5–7 leaflets. Leaves have a delicious fragrance, when bruised. The dog rose blooms from June to July, with sweet scented flowers which are usually pale pink, but can vary between a deep pink and white. They are in diameter with five petals. As other roses it has a quintuscial aestivation (see sketch A in diagram). ''Rosa rubiginosa'' (sweet briar, sweetbriar rose, sweet brier or eglantine; synonym (taxonomy), syn. ''R. eglanteria'') is a species of rose native to Europe and western Asia. Description It is a dense deciduous shrub 2–3 meters high and across, with the stems bearing numerously hooked Spine (botany), prickles. The foliage has a strong apple-like fragrance. The leaf, leaves are pinnately compound, 5–9 cm long, with 5–9 rounded to oval leaflets with a serrated margin, and numerous glandular hairs. The flowers are 1.8–3 cm in diameter, the five petals being pink with a white base, and the numerous stamens yellow; the flowers are produced in clusters of 2–7 together, from late spring to mid-summer.
