The Rolls-Royce SMR, also known as the UK SMR, is a small modular reactor (SMR) being developed by the Rolls-Royce (RR) company in the United Kingdom. The company has been given financial support by the UK Government to develop its design. It is estimated that the 470MWe units will cost around £1.8billion once in full production, compared with £22billion for a full-sized nuclear power station such as the planned 3,300MWe Sizewell C. Construction time and site size needed will also be lower. History RR began design work on the SMR with a team of about 150 people, with decisions made near the start of the project to use light water as both coolant and moderator. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are a proposed class of nuclear fission reactors, smaller than conventional nuclear reactors, which can be built in one location (such as a factory), then shipped, commissioned, and operated at a separate site. The term SMR refers to the size, capacity and modular construction only, not to the reactor type and the nuclear process which is applied. Designs range from scaled down versions of existing designs to generation IV designs. Both thermal-neutron reactors and fast-neutron reactors have been proposed, along with molten salt and gas cooled reactor models. Wylfa Nuclear Power Station
Wylfa nuclear power station ( cy, Atomfa'r Wylfa) is a Magnox nuclear power station undergoing decommissioning. Wylfa is situated west of Cemaes Bay on the island of Anglesey, off the northwestern coast of Wales. Construction of the two 490MW nuclear reactors, known as Reactor 1 and Reactor 2, began in 1963. They became operational in 1971. Wylfa was located on the coast because seawater was used as a coolant. In 2012, Reactor 2 was shut down. Reactor 1 was switched off on 30 December 2015, ending 44 years of operation at the site. Wylfa Newydd (literally New Wylfa) was a proposed new nuclear station on a site adjacent to the old plant. U-battery is a micro–small modular reactor design of a nuclear reactor. History The design for U-Battery was created at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Manchester University in the United Kingdom basing it on high temperature reactor (HTR) technology which was already available in Europe. A consortium was formed to develop the product, participants including consortium that includes Urenco, Kinectrics and Jacobs Solutions. Finance has been supported by grants from the UK government's Advanced Modular Reactor Feasibility and Development project, being selected for phase two in July 2020. A pressurized water reactor (PWR) is a type of light-water reactor, light-water nuclear reactor. PWRs constitute the large majority of the world's nuclear power plants (with notable exceptions being the UK, Japan and Canada).
