Roger Van De Velde
Roger van de Velde (13 February 1925 - 30 May 1970) was a Belgian author and journalist, known for his collections of short stories written while he was interred in psychiatric institutions. Early and professional life Roger van de Velde was born in Boom, near Antwerp, the son of wine merchant Jan Frans van de Velde and Maria Callaer. When his father died in 1932, his mother remarried Louis Eykmans, a clerk at Willem Elsschot's advertising agency. He would become acquainted with the famous author, who assessed and gave advice about his poetry, as well as a short story, ''Scheiding van goederen'' (1954), which was published episodically in the magazine ''Standpunt''. van de Velde joined the Belgian Army at the age of 21, but left after a year. His friendship with Elsschot helped him to get a job working as a journalist for the ''Nieuw Gazet'' in 1947, writing about a wide range of topics, including drama, football, politics and society of the day. Boom (, ; ) is a Belgian town, located in both the arrondissement and province of Antwerp. In 2021, Boom had a total population of 18,799. The total area is 7.37 km² (2.85 sq mi). Alphonsus Josephus de Ridder (7 May 1882 – 31 May 1960), was a Belgian writer and poet who wrote under the pseudonym Willem Elsschot (). One of the most prominent Flemish authors, his most famous work, ''Cheese'' (1933) is the most translated Flemish-language novel of all time. Early life and education Elsschot was born Alphonsus Josephus de Ridder on 7 May 1882 in Antwerp, to a family of bakers. As a child he would often visit his uncle in rural Blauberg, near Herselt, where they would walk in the Helschot area, from which he would later derive his pen name. Hubert Leon Lampo ( Antwerp, 1 September 1920 – Essen, 12 July 2006) was a Flemish writer, one of the founders of magic realism in Flanders. His most famous book is '' De komst van Joachim Stiller'' ("The coming of Joachim Stiller", 1960), in which a mysterious person, named Joachim Stiller, appears as a redeemer, under circumstances reminiscent of the death of Jesus. Jeroen Brouwers
Jeroen Godfried Marie Brouwers (30 April 1940 – 11 May 2022) was a Dutch writer. From 1964 to 1976 Brouwers worked as an editor at Manteau publishers in Brussels. In 1964 he made his literary debut with ''Het mes op de keel'' (''The Knife to the Throat''). He won the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prijs in 1989 for ''De zondvloed'', the Constantijn Huygens Prize in 1993 for his collected works, and in 1995 the Prix Femina for International works for his book ''Bezonken rood'' (''Sunken Red''). In 2007 he refused the Dutch Literature Prize (Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren) - the highest literary accolade in the Dutch-speaking world - because he considered the prize money of €16,000 too low for all his work. Dextromoramide (Palfium, Palphium, Jetrium, Dimorlin) is a powerful opioid analgesic approximately three times more potent than morphine but shorter acting. It is subject to drug prohibition regimes, both internationally through UN treaties and by the criminal law of individual states, and is usually prescribed only in the Netherlands. History Dextromoramide was discovered and patented in 1956 by Dr Paul Janssen at Janssen Pharmaceutica, who also discovered fentanyl, another important synthetic opioid, widely used to treat pain and in combination with other drugs as an anaesthetic, as well as haloperidol, piritramide, the loperamide-diphenoxylate series and other important drugs. The Arkprijs van het Vrije Woord (Ark Prize of the Free Word) is a symbolic award created in 1951 by Herman Teirlinck and the editorial team of the ''Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift'' (New Flemish magazine) to counteract ideologically driven restrictions on the freedom of expression. Teirlinck wanted to spotlight those persons who actively promote the freedom of opinion. No financial reward is associated with the prize.
