Robert Bruce (Yukon Politician)
Robert Bruce (born July 12, 1948) is a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Vuntut Gwitchin in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2000. He was a member of the Yukon New Democratic Party. He was born in Old Crow, Yukon and was educated in the Yukon. After a tied vote between Bruce and incumbent MLA Esau Schafer in the 1996 election, Bruce was chosen as the victor by his name being drawn out of a hat. A court order in 1997 overturned the results and mandated a new by-election in the riding, which Bruce won. He served as Speaker for the assembly from 1996 until his election was overturned in February 1997 and from April 14, 1997 until the assembly was dissolved in 2000. He did not stand for re-election in the 2000 election. The Yukon Legislative Assembly (french: Assemblée législative du Yukon) is the legislative assembly for Yukon, Canada. Unique among Canada's Provinces and territories of Canada, three territories, the Yukon Legislative Assembly is the only territorial legislature which is organized along political party lines. Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation
The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (VGFN) is a First Nation in the northern Yukon in Canada. Its main population centre is Old Crow. The language originally spoken by the people is Gwichʼin. Gwich'in Nation Vuntut Gwich'in refers specifically to the Gwich'in people who lived in Van Tat which translates as "people of the lakes." More recently, VGFN has incorporated the Vuntut Gwich'in and Dagoo Gwich'in (who traditionally lived further up the Porcupine River). The wider Gwich'in nation is spread across northwestern Canada and Alaska. Vuntut Gwitchin is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in Canada. It is one of the Yukon's eight rural seats. The electoral district was known as Old Crow, named after the community it encompasses, before 1992. In the 1974 election and the 1970 election, the riding was part of Ogilvie and Dawson, respectively. It is the least populated electoral district in any provincial or territorial legislature in Canada, with fewer than 200 total ballots cast in any territorial election to date. In two elections since the district's creation, in 1996 and 2021, two candidates finished in an exact tie; under Yukon election law, a tied vote is settled by drawing lots rather than by reconducting a full by-election.
