Rita Thomson
Rita Thomson (16 August 1934 – 11 October 2019) was a Scottish nurse who looked after the composer Benjamin Britten and the singer Peter Pears at their home in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England. Early life Thomson was born in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty (UK Parliament constituency), Ross and Cromarty, in the Scottish Highlands. She was the second daughter of Evander Thomson, a coachtrimmer, coach trimmer. She attended Dingwall Academy, and the Edinburgh School of Mothercraft, afterwards training as a nurse at the Royal Northern Hospital in Inverness. She further trained in thoracic medicine at London's Royal Brompton Hospital. Career Thomson worked in Australia for two years, before returning to London in 1965, to be appointed senior ward sister at London's National Heart Hospital. In 1973, she was part of the team looking after the composer Benjamin Britten, who was brought into intensive care for an operation to replace a heart valve. Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976, aged 63) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th-century British music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. His best-known works include the opera '' Peter Grimes'' (1945), the '' War Requiem'' (1962) and the orchestral showpiece ''The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra'' (1945). Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, the son of a dentist, Britten showed talent from an early age. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London and privately with the composer Frank Bridge. Britten first came to public attention with the '' a cappella'' choral work '' A Boy was Born'' in 1934. With the premiere of ''Peter Grimes'' in 1945, he leapt to international fame.
