Richmond County District Attorney
The Richmond County District Attorney is the elected district attorney for Richmond County, coterminous with the Borough of Staten Island, in New York City. The office is responsible for the prosecution of violations of New York state laws, as violations of federal law in Richmond County are prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. The current District Attorney is Michael McMahon. History In a legislative act of February 12, 1796, New York State was divided into seven districts, each with its own Assistant Attorney General. Richmond County was part of the First District, which also included Kings, Queens, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. At that time, Queens County included much of present-day Nassau County, and Westchester County included present-day Bronx County. Federalist Party
The Federalist Party was a conservative political party which was the first political party in the United States. As such, under Alexander Hamilton, it dominated the national government from 1789 to 1801. Defeated by the Jeffersonian Republicans in 1800, it became a minority party while keeping its stronghold in New England and made a brief resurgence by opposing the War of 1812. It then collapsed with its last presidential candidate in 1816. Remnants lasted for a few years afterwards. John Croak (New York Politician)
John Croak (October 25, 1846 – August 31, 1930) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge from New York. Life Croak was born on October 25, 1846, in Elm Park, Staten Island, New York, the son of Irish immigrant Thomas Croak and Ann Murphy. When Croak was young, he began studying law in the office of S. E. Church of Manhattan, followed by Brown & Estes in Manhattan. He attended and graduated from Albany Law School, where he was a classmate of future President William McKinley. He was admitted to the bar in 1867, and in 1870 he began practicing law in New York City. For twenty years, he had an office on 229 Broadway, where the Woolworth Building was later built. He also served as a counsel to the police commissioner and various public boards. Croak served two terms as District Attorney. Sidney Fuller Rawson
Sidney Fuller Rawson (December 15, 1843 – March 20, 1916) was an American lawyer and judge from New York. Life Rawson was born on December 15, 1843 in Schroon Lake, New York. He was the son of Ashley Pond Rawson, Justice of the Court of Sessions for Essex County, and Adaline Crego. He was a direct descendant of Edward Rawson, secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After attending school and studying law under Cyrus Blanchard, Rawson initially worked as principal of a public school. This ended in June 1862, during the American Civil War, when he enlisted in the 118th New York Infantry Regiment. He served under Brigadier-General Isaac J. Wistar at Yorktown and under Major-General W. F. Smith at Drury's Bluff. He spent a lot of time serving as Chief Clerk of his division or post headquarters, and at one point was in charge of a large corps of clerks in the office of the U.S. Army Hospital in Point Lookout, Maryland. George Metcalfe (29 April 1837 – 29 May 1927) was a London-born Australian educationalist, school proprietor and writer. As proprietor and Headmaster of the High School, Goulburn, he was responsible for the pre-university education of two Premiers of New South Wales. Early life Little is known of Metcalfe's life or education in London prior to his arrival in Australia. In January 1858 he commenced teaching as the fourth master at the Flinders School in Geelong, Victoria. With the arrival of George Morrison as Headmaster in 1859 he was promoted to the position of third master. He passed the Victorian matriculation exam in November 1860 and entered the University of Melbourne in March 1862. In April 1866, Metcalfe was awarded a Bachelor of Arts.
