Paul Eduard Richard Sohn (11 November 1834, Düsseldorf - 9 March 1912, Düsseldorf) was a German genre painter. His younger brother, Karl Rudolf, was also a well known painter. Biography He was born to the artist, Karl Ferdinand Sohn, and his wife Emilie Auguste née Von Mülmann (1805-1884); a sister of the government councillor, . In 1851, he completed his public school education at the "Städtischen Realschule" (now the ""). His first artistic studies were with his father. He then enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied with Rudolf Wiegmann, Heinrich Mücke, and . After 1855, he attended the master classes taught by Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow. Johann August Wilhelm Sohn (29 August 1829, in Berlin – 16 March 1899, in Pützchen, near Bonn) was a German genre painter and art professor. Life Johann August Wilhelm Sohn was born 29 August 1829, in Berlin, Germany. In 1847, he went to Düsseldorf, where he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Academy) with Rudolf Wiegmann, Theodor Hildebrandt, Wilhelm von Schadow and his uncle, Karl Ferdinand Sohn. After that, he supplemented his studies by traveling extensively. In 1861, he married his cousin, Sophie Emilie (Emmy) Sohn, making Karl Ferdinand his uncle and father-in-law. In keeping with the spirit of the Düsseldorf school of painting, he began by painting Biblical history scenes; notably " Christ on the Stormy Waters". Elisabeth "Else" Johanna Martha Maria Sohn-Rethel (14 March 1853 – 22 January 1933) was a German painter and singer, active in the mid and late 19th-century. Biography Elisabeth Johanna Martha Maria Rethel was born 14 March 1853 in Rome, Italy into an upper class German Jewish family. Her mother was Marie Elisabeth Henrietta Philippina Grahl and her father was history painter, Alfred Rethel. She was a descendant on her maternal line of the noble Oppenheim family, her great grandfather was banker Martin Wilhelm Oppenheim. Her maternal grandfather was miniature painter and portraitist, August Grahl, and she was raised by her mother and maternal grandparents at Villa Rosa (in Dresden) due to her father's mental health issues. Malkasten (English: "Paintbox") is a progressive German artists' association, founded in Düsseldorf in 1848, during the March Revolution. Since 1867, their headquarters have been in the Pempelfort district. History During the unrest in 1848, artists also began to take part in political discussions. In August of that year, the held an event called the "Fest der Deutschen Einheit" (Festival for German Unity). Many artists and sculptors associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule took part in its artistic design. On the night of the celebration, they decided to establish an artist's association which, a few days later, they named "Malkasten", at the suggestion of Karl Hübner. Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (4 May 1810, Berlin – 20 March 1887, Düsseldorf) was a German genre painter, illustrator, etcher and art teacher. Biography His father was a member of the Judicial Council and he was a descendant of Charles-Étienne Jordan; advisor to Frederick the Great. After completing his basic artistic studies with Karl Wilhelm Wach at his private school in Berlin, Jordan moved to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he took master classes with Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and Karl Ferdinand Sohn. In 1837, he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. He graduated from the Kunstakademie in 1840 and, from 1848, operated his own studio; creating genre scenes and giving lessons.
