Research Fortnight
''Research Fortnight'' is an independent publication that reports on research policy and funding in the UK. It is sold by institutional subscription; some 95% of universities in the UK subscribe to it, along with government agencies and research councils. The title is read by pro vice-chancellors for research, government scientists, policymakers, research managers and individual researchers. ''Research Fortnight'' was launched in 1994 by William Cullerne Bown, an entrepreneur and former journalist on ''The Independent'' and ''New Scientist''. It has since launched sister publications ''Research Europe'', Onderzoek Nederland, Research Africa, Funding Insight and HE. It maintains a database of research grants offered by government agencies, charities and other providers across the world, to which subscribers have access. Research Excellence Framework
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a research impact evaluation of British higher education institutions. It is the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise and it was first used in 2014 to assess the period 2008–2013. REF is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies: Research England, the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE). Its stated aims are to provide accountability for public investment in research, establish "reputational yardsticks", and thereby to achieve an efficient allocation of resources. Critics argue, inter alia, that there is too much focus on the impact of research outside of the university system, and that impact has no real relevance to the quality of research. Sutton Trust
The Sutton Trust is an educational charity in the United Kingdom which aims to improve social mobility and address educational disadvantage. The charity was set up by educational philanthropist, Sir Peter Lampl in 1997. Since then, it has undertaken over 150 research studies and funded a wide range of practical programmes for young people in early years, primary and secondary school, with the aim of increasing access to higher education and the professions. The charity's Chief Executive is James Turner, formerly of the Education Endowment Foundation. The Wellcome Trust is a charitable foundation focused on health research based in London, in the United Kingdom. It was established in 1936 with legacies from the pharmaceutical magnate Henry Wellcome (founder of one of the predecessors of GlaxoSmithKline) to fund research to improve human and animal health. Hannah Devlin
Hannah Devlin is an author in London and science correspondent for ''The Guardian''. Education Devlin attended St Bede's College, Manchester, where she studied A-Levels in Maths, Physics, French and General Studies. She completed an undergraduate degree in physics at Imperial College London in 2004 She has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in functional magnetic resonance imaging from the University of Oxford for research supervised by Peter Jezzard. Think Tanks
A think tank, or policy institute, is a research institute that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture. Most think tanks are non-governmental organizations, but some are semi-autonomous agencies within government or are associated with particular political parties, businesses or the military. Think-tank funding often includes a combination of donations from very wealthy people and those not so wealthy, with many also accepting government grants. Think tanks publish articles and studies, and even draft legislation on particular matters of policy or society. Ehsan Masood
Hassan Ehsan Masood (born 9 August 1967) is a British science writer, journalist and broadcaster.
