Renié
Renié Conley (July 31, 1901 − June 12, 1992) was a prominent Hollywood costume designer. Biography Born in Republic, Washington and studied at Chouinard Art Institute and University of California in Los Angeles. For over three decades, Renié was noted for clothing the stars in subtle, elegant outfits, as can be seen in the eponymous costumes Ginger Rogers wore as the glamorous all-American working girl in '' Kitty Foyle'' (1940). She got her start designing theatre sets and then working as a sketch artist for Paramount Pictures. In 1937, she became a costume designer for RKO Pictures. She remained with the studio, attiring its biggest stars until the 1950s when she started freelancing. In addition to films, Renié's work can also be seen on such television series as '' Haywire'' (1990 - 1991). Cleopatra (1963 Film)
''Cleopatra'' is a 1963 American epic historical drama film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, with a screenplay adapted by Mankiewicz, Ranald MacDougall and Sidney Buchman from the 1957 book ''The Life and Times of Cleopatra'' by Carlo Maria Franzero, and from histories by Plutarch, Suetonius, and Appian. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor in the eponymous role. Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Roddy McDowall, and Martin Landau are featured in supporting roles. It chronicles the struggles of Cleopatra, the young queen of Egypt, to resist the imperial ambitions of Rome. Walter Wanger had long contemplated producing a biographical film about Cleopatra. Kitty Foyle (dress)
A Kitty Foyle is a dress style of the popular in the 1940s characterized by a dark fabric and contrasting light collar and cuffs, typically of navy blue and white. The shape of the dress is a shirtwaist with short or elbow-length sleeves. It is named after a dress worn by Ginger Rogers' character in the 1940 film of the same name, designed by Renié. The style has been explained as being deliberately intended for films, the large amount of white around the face reflecting the key light onto the face, giving a well-defined and flattering profile. As a modest and practical style that was easily copied at home, or could even be used to update an old shirtwaist dress to a new fashion by applying a new collar, it became popular during the wartime austerity period. The style has returned to fashion at times since. Haywire (TV Series)
''Haywire'' is a sketch comedy television series which was aired by Fox as part of its 1990-91 lineup. ''Haywire'' included segments such as: "Mind Your Manners with Billy Quan", which described etiquette for kung fu practitioners, which was originally a sketch from the Seattle-based sketch comedy show, ''Almost Live!''; "The Persuaders", in which cast members attempted to persuade people on the street to do unusual, zany things; and "Thrillseekers", in which the introduction to the old Chuck Connors show was used to introduce people who had boring jobs or who were in very mundane, nonthreatening situations. Other features included commercial spoofs and showing scenes from both old black-and-white films and shots of people on the street with redubbed and presumably funnier dialogue.
