Remake Italy
Remake Italy ( it, Rifare l'Italia), whose members were known as Young Turks (''Giovani Turchi''), was a social-democratic and, to some extent, democratic-socialist faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. Prominent members included Matteo Orfini, Stefano Fassina, Andrea Orlando, Maurizio Martina, Roberto Gualtieri, Francesco Verducci and Fausto Raciti. The faction's leader, Orfini, was elected president of the PD in June 2014. History The group was originally formed in 2010, but became an effective faction only with the formation of the association named "Remake Italy" in 2011. Mostly former Democrats of the Left, young ''Dalemiani'' and anti-New Labour social-democrats, the Young Turks opposed Mario Monti's government and the rise within the party of Matteo Renzi, a reformer who was the darling of PD's liberals. Matteo Orfini is an Italian politician, a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and President of the Democratic Party. Biography Matteo Orfini was born in Rome in 1974. He started his interest in politics when he attended the lyceum. In 2004 became a collaborator of the left-wing leader, Massimo D’Alema, after his election in the European Parliament. Mario Monti
Mario Monti, (born 19 March 1943) is an Italian economist and academic who served as the Prime Minister of Italy from 2011 to 2013, leading a technocratic government in the wake of the Italian debt crisis. Monti served as a European Commissioner from 1995 to 2004, with responsibility for the Internal Market, Services, Customs and Taxation from 1995 to 1999 and for Competition from 1999 to 2004. Monti has also been rector and president of Bocconi University in Milan for many years. Cesare Damiano
Cesare Damiano (born 15 June 1948 in Cuneo) is an Italian politician, member of the Democratic Party. A former leading member of the CGIL trade union, Damiano has been a part of the Democrats of the Left national secretaryship since 2001. He is a former Minister of Labour. Nicola Zingaretti
Nicola Zingaretti (; born 11 October 1965) is an Italian politician who served as President of Lazio and was Secretary of the Democratic Party from March 2019 until March 2021. During the 1990s, he was a prominent European youth leader, serving as National Secretary of the Left Youth, the youth-wing of the Democratic Party of the Left and as President of the International Union of Socialist Youth. Luciano Violante
Luciano Violante (born 25 September 1941) is an Italian judge and politician, Member of Parliament from 1979 to 2008. He is particularly interested in questions of justice, the struggle against the Mafia and institutional reform. Biography Violante was born in Dire Dawa, in the Italian Ethiopian part of Italian East Africa. His father, a journalist and Communist, was forced to emigrate to Ethiopia by the fascist regime. 2017 Democratic Party (Italy) Leadership Election
The 2017 Democratic Party leadership election was an open primary election held on 30 April 2017. The three candidates were Matteo Renzi, former Prime Minister and party secretary until February 2017, Michele Emiliano, President of Apulia, and Andrea Orlando, the Minister of Justice. Renzi was elected by a landslide 70%, and appointed Maurizio Martina as his deputy secretary. Electoral process Candidates were required to file their candidacies by 6 March 2017. Local and provincial conventions then take place all around the country, where party members vote on the candidates for secretary. Under party rules, the candidates who receive the support of at least the 15% of voting party members in local conventions, or the three most voted candidates above 5% of the vote, qualify for the second round of the race and have the chance to present their platform at the national convention. Left is Change (''Sinistra è Cambiamento'', SèC) was a social-democratic faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. Most of its members hailed from the Democrats of the Left (DS). The faction was formed, mainly by splinters of Remake Italy and Reformist Area, in June 2015. At its foundation, the faction counted around 70 MPs, notably including Maurizio Martina (minister of Agriculture in Renzi Cabinet), Cesare Damiano, Anna Finocchiaro, Matteo Mauri, Enzo Amendola, Paola De Micheli and Luciano Pizzetti. The Renzi government was the 63rd government of the Italian Republic, in office from February 2014 to December 2016. The 2013 Democratic Party leadership election was an open primary election held in November–December 2013. After having come first in the vote by party members, Matteo Renzi was elected by a landslide 68% in a three-way primary on 8 December. 2013 Italian General Election
The 2013 Italian general election was held on 24 and 25 February 2013 to determine the 630 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 315 elective members of the Senate of the Republic for the 17th Italian Parliament. The centre-left alliance Italy Common Good, led by the Democratic Party (PD), obtained a clear majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies thanks to a majority bonus that effectively trebled the number of seats assigned to the winning force and narrowly defeated the centre-right alliance of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the popular vote.
