Radiant Identities
''Radiant Identities'' is a 1994 photography book by Jock Sturges. The book consists of 60 black-and-white images of both children and adults, many of which show nudity. Photos were taken primarily at nude beaches in France and California. The girl on the front cover is Misty Dawn, a model featured in many of Stuges's books. In the United States, the book has been mentioned in debates over whether nude pictures of children is art or pornography. Controversy In 1998 ''Radiant Identities'' and Sturges' previous book, '' The Last Day of Summer'', along with ''The Age of Innocence ''The Age of Innocence'' is a 1920 novel by American author Edith Wharton. Jock Sturges
John Sturges (; born 1947), known as Jock Sturges, is an American photographer, best known for his images of nude Adolescence, adolescents and their families. Sturges pled guilty in 2021 at Franklin County (MA) Superior Court to an unnatural and lascivious act with a child under 16. Early life and education Sturges was born in 1947 in New York. From 1966 to 1970, he served in the United States Navy as a Russian linguist. He graduated with a BFA in Perceptual psychology and Photography from Marlboro College and received an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. Career His subjects are nude adolescents and their families, primarily taken at communes in Northern California and at the Atlantic-coast naturist resort CHM Montalivet in Vendays-Montalivet. The Last Day Of Summer (book)
''The Last Day of Summer'' is a 1991 photography book by Jock Sturges. The book is Sturges' first and consists of 60 black-and-white images of both children and adults, many of which show nudity. Many photos were taken at nude beaches in France, including the image on the front cover, which is of a girl named Marine, who would later also appear on the cover of Sturges 2000 book, ''Jock Sturges: New Work 1996–2000''. Reception A. D. Coleman gave a favourable review of the book in ''The New York Observer'', stating: "Sturges sustains a delicate balance on a very precarious wire ... His struggle is to observe and render his subjects in all of their complexities, trembling on the cusp of change. Nudity
Nudity is the state of being in which a human is without clothing. The loss of body hair was one of the physical characteristics that marked the biological evolution of modern humans from their hominin ancestors. Adaptations related to hairlessness contributed to the increase in brain size, bipedalism, and the variation in human skin color. While estimates vary, for at least 90,000 years anatomically modern humans were naked. The invention of clothing was part of the transition from being not only anatomically but behaviorally modern. Clothing and body adornments were elements in non-verbal communication reflecting social status and individuality. The Age Of Innocence (Hamilton Book)
''The Age of Innocence'' is a 1995 photography and poetry book by David Hamilton. The book contains images of early-teen girls, often nude, accompanied by lyrical poetry. Images are in a boudoir setting and photographed mainly in colour using a soft-focus filter, with some shots in black-and-white. Reception The book is one of Hamilton's most popular titles. According to the ''Los Angeles Times'', the book's images are "thought by thousands of critics and consumers to be socially acceptable, even wonderful."
