Rusty Bugles (1981 Film)
''Rusty Bugles'' is a 1981 Australian television film based on the stage play of the same name. Production Sumner Locke Elliot announced in the late 1970s he wanted the play to be filmed. The ABC filmed it in 1981. It was the second last in a series of play adaptations on the ABC. By this stage the play was established as a modern classic – it had been published by Currency Press in 1980 – and the Herald called it "a wry, rich and intensely Australian comedy peopled by Australian soldiers who chafe at the boredom of life in an out of the way camp while their mates are off fighting a real war." Alan Burke was again associated with the production as producer, although John Matthews was the director. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting, and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. Sean Scully (born 28 September 1947) is an Australian actor and singer, active in film, television and theatre, most especially serials. Early life The son of actress and radio host Margaret Christensen, Scully was born in Sydney, New South Wales. Career Scully began his acting career at the age of 12 in the 1960 Children's Film Foundation film '' Hunted in Holland'', which won the Diploma of Honour at the Cannes Film Festival. Following that, he was signed by Walt Disney and starred in a number of Technicolor family feature films for the studio, including ''The Prince and the Pauper'' (filmed 1961, released 1962), in which he played both title characters, alongside Guy Williams as Miles Hendon, and also played opposite Patrick McGoohan in '' Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow'' (1963). Gary Files (born 13 September 1938) is an Australian-Canadian actor, theatre director and radio writer who has worked in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. Resident in Australia since 1976, Files is noted for the accentual versatility of his radio-based voice acting. Early life Born in Melbourne, Files started his career in early Australian television and semi-professional theatre in 1956. He left for Canada in 1959. Having won a scholarship from the Canada Council, Files attended the National Theatre School at Montreal and Stratford, Ontario – joining the second acting year of the school in 1961 and graduating three years later. He subsequently joined John Hirsch's Manitoba Theatre Company for one season, during which time he appeared in ''The Taming of the Shrew'' with Len Cariou, and ''Mother Courage'' with Zoe Caldwell. Tony Barry
Tony Barry (28 August 1941 – 21 December 2022) was an Australian actor and activist best known for his television and film roles. Personal life Barry was born in Ipswich, Queensland, on 28 August 1941. He had one son. Barry was an environmental and Indigenous rights activist and considered himself "an honorary Kiwi". Barry is the only Australian who was featured on a New Zealand postage stamp. He took part in political rallies and was a volunteer for rehabilitation programs for indigenous rights groups. He visited high schools where he would promote environmentalism. Health Barry was diagnosed with melanoma in the early 2000s. In 2014, between seasons of the television drama series '' The Time of Our Lives'', Barry had his left leg amputated above the knee due to the illness. The loss of his leg was written into the storyline. Due to this illness, he died on 21 December 2022, at age 81, in Murwillumbah, New South Wales. Serge Constantine Lazareff (7 August 1944 – 20 August 2021) was an Australian actor and screenwriter/editor, who was born in Shanghai, China. He appeared in 54 roles from the late 1960s until 1999, before starting a second career as a writer for TV series. Acting Lazareff performed in many Australian television series from the late 1960s to the late 1990s and made numerous appearances in Crawford Productions police shows including ''The Sullivans'', ''Homicide (Australian TV series), Homicide'', ''Division 4'', ''Matlock Police'' and ''Chopper Squad''.
