Rumiñahui Canton
Rumiñahui (in Hispanicized spelling, ) or Rumiñawi (Quechua ''rumi'' stone, ''ñawi'' eye, "stone eye") is a canton of Pichincha Province in Ecuador. Its seat is Sangolquí. The canton lies southeast of Quito Canton and forms a suburb of Quito. Rumiñahui was named a ''Pueblo Mágico'' by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) in 2020. It was the first canton in Pichincha to be awarded that distinction. Cantons Of Ecuador
The cantons of Ecuador are the second-level subdivisions of Ecuador, below the provinces. The cantons are further subdivided into parishes, which are classified as either urban or rural. As of 2025, there are 222 cantons in the country. The most recently created cantons are Sevilla Don Bosco in Morona Santiago Province in 2024; and La Concordia in Esmeraldas Province in 2007, although in 2013 La Concordia was transferred to Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province. Pueblos Mágicos (Ecuador)
The ''Programa Pueblos Mágicos'' (Spanish: weβloˈmaxiko "Magical Towns Programme") is an initiative led by Ecuador's Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR). The program seeks to promote tourism in a network of small and mid-sized towns that represent aspects of Ecuador's cultural heritage, and to encourage sustainable economic development in these communities. It is based on the Mexican government's program of the same name. The network was first established in 2019, with an inaugural class of 5 municipalities. As of 16 March 2021, there were 21 designated ''Pueblos Mágicos'', distributed among 14 of Ecuador's 24 provinces. Rumiñawi (Inca Warrior)
Rumiñawi, born late 15th century in present-day Ecuador, died June 25, 1535, was a general during the Inca Civil War. Hispanicized spellings of his name include Rumiaoui, Ruminavi, Ruminagui, Rumiñagui, and Rumiñahui. After the death of Emperor Atahualpa, he led an uprising in 1533 against the Spanish in the northern part of the Inca Empire (modern-day Ecuador). According to tradition he ordered the city's treasure to be hidden and the city burned. Although captured and tortured, he never revealed the treasure. Since 1985, 1 December has been celebrated as a day of commemoration of his acts. Life Born in Pillaro in modern Tungurahua Province in Ecuador, his given name was Ati II Pillahuaso. Inca historians tend to believe that he was Atahualpa's half-brother, born from a native noble woman. Sangolquí Parish
Sangolquí is a suburb of Quito and the seat of Rumiñahui canton in the province of Pichincha, in northern Ecuador. It is connected to Quito by the ''Autopista General Rumiñahui'' (General Rumiñahui Highway). The suburb is home to the prestigious university ESPE, one of the best universities in Ecuador. It is also home to Colegio Liceo del Valle, Colegio Antares, Liceo Naval Quito and "Émile Jaques-Dalcroze" High School, which offers International Baccalaureate and is an authorized centre for University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. The suburb also holds the football club Independiente del Valle that reached the final of the 2016 Copa Libertadores, won the 2019 and the 2022 Copa Sudamericana.
