Ruiz, Nayarit
Ruiz is a municipality and the municipal seat of the same located in the north of the Mexican state of Nayarit. Origin of the name The name was given to honor General Mariano Ruiz (1846–1932), soldier of the Mexican Revolution and last political leader of the territory of Tepic, who lived in and supplied the settlement until 1910. Population The population of the municipality, according to the census of 1995, was 25, 591. The municipal seat itself had 12,266 inhabitants in 1995. Indigenous population There is a relatively large indigenous population that lives in the mountains. According to the 1995 census it consisted of 1,866 people, or 9.8% of the population. The most numerous ethnic groups are the Cora and the Huichol. These Native Americans can often be seen in the main population center selling their traditional crafts and stocking up on provisions. Nayarit
Nayarit, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Nayarit, is one of the 31 states that, along with Mexico City, comprise the Political divisions of Mexico, Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in Municipalities of Nayarit, 20 municipalities and its capital city is Tepic. It is bordered by the states of Sinaloa to the northwest, Durango to the north, Zacatecas to the northeast and Jalisco to the south. Tepic
Tepic () is the capital and largest city of the western Mexico, Mexican Political divisions of Mexico, state of Nayarit, as well as the seat of the Tepic Municipality. Located in the central part of the state, it stands at an altitude of above sea level, on the banks of the Río Mololoa and the Río Tepic, approximately north-west of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Nearby are the volcanoes of San Juan, Las Navajas, and Sangangüey. Tepic is the primary urban center of this rich agricultural region; major crops include sugarcane, tobacco and citrus fruits. Cora People
The Cora are an Indigenous ethnic group of North Western Mexico which live in the municipality El Nayar, Rosamorada, Ruiz, Tepic, in the Mexican state of Nayarit, Mezquital in Durango and in a few settlements in the neighboring state of Jalisco. They call themselves ''náayerite'' (plural; ''náayeri'' singular), whence the name of the present day Mexican state of Nayarit. They reside within a series of ''comunidades indígenas'' (colonial land grants) and '' ejidos'' (contemporary agricultural communes). The 2000 Mexican census reported that there were 24,390 people who were members of Cora-speaking households, these being defined as households where at least one parent or elder claims to speak the Cora language. Huichol People
The Huichol () or Wixárika () are an Indigenous people of Mexico living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango, with considerable communities in the United States, in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. They are best known to the larger world as the ''Huichol'', although they refer to themselves as ''Wixáritari'' ("the people") in their Huichol language. The adjectival form of ''Wixáritari'' and name for their own language is ''Wixárika''. The Wixárika speak a language of the Wixarikan group that is closely related to the Nahuatl group. Furthermore, they have received Mesoamerican influences, which is reflected by the fact that Wixarika has features typical to the Mesoamerican language area. Rosamorada () is a municipality of the state of Nayarit in Mexico. It is located in the middle of the state. El Nayar
El Nayar is a municipality in the Mexican state of Nayarit, being the largest municipality in Nayarit. The population was 30,551 in 2005 in a total area of 5,100 km². The municipal seat of Jesús María had a population of 1,520 in 2005. El Nayar is the home of the Huichol, Cora, and the Tepehuán Indians. El Nayar is the largest municipality by land area in the state. Its area makes up 18.46% of the surface of the state. It is sparsely populated. Santiago de Ixcuintla is a municipality and a municipal seat in the western Mexico, Mexican state of Nayarit. The municipal population was 93,981 inhabitants (census of 2020) with the municipal seat having a population of 25,241. The area of the municipality was 1,831.92 square kilometers. It is located at 21º48'40" N and 105º12'23" W.
