Royal Albert, Deptford
The Royal Albert is a Grade II listed pub located at 460 New Cross Road, on the border of the New Cross and Deptford areas of the London Borough of Lewisham in south-east London. History The building was designated as Grade II listed in 1973, the entry states it is mid-19th century. It's mentioned in an edition of ''The Freemasons' Magazine and Masonic Mirror'' from 1858. It was called The Paradise Bar for a time in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, by 2005 it was called Six Strings, before eventually returning to its original name. Whilst named The Paradise Bar it regularly held concerts, as well as funk and soul jam sessions that were often attended by students at nearby Goldsmiths University. The Damron Women's Traveller '98 lists Sunday nights at the bar as ''Je Suis Music'', a popular club night attended by lesbians and gay men. Deptford
Deptford is an area on the south bank of the River Thames in southeast London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and London Borough of Lewisham. It is named after a Ford (crossing), ford of the River Ravensbourne. From the mid 16th century to the late 19th it was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Navy Dockyard, Royal Dockyards. This was a major shipbuilding dock and attracted Peter the Great to come and study shipbuilding. Nubya Nyasha Garcia (born 1991) is a British jazz musician, Saxophone, saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Early life and education Garcia was born in 1991 in Camden Town, London, the youngest of four siblings, to a Guyanese people, Guyanese mother, a former Civil service, civil servant, and a British Trinidadian Filmmaking, filmmaker father. Garcia followed her three older siblings to the local Camden Saturday Music Centre at the age of five, where she first learned the violin and later played the viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO). Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ''News Shopper'' titles are local newspapers published in South East London and North West Kent by Newsquest. There are five local editions: Bexley Borough, Bexley & North Kent, Bromley, Dartford & Gravesend, and Lewisham & Greenwich. Beginnings The paper was founded in 1965 by a group of five men: advertising salesman Richard Addison, Gerald McKnight, onetime editor of the '' Sunday Dispatch''; David English, later to become Sir David English, and South African millionaire lawyers Rayne Kruger and Anthony Aaronson. Antic Collective
Antic Collective is a company which runs roughly 50 public house, pubs in London. The original company, which was founded in 2000, went into administration in 2013 over unpaid debts. Some pubs were closed and the remaining operating pubs were sold to a sister company Gregarious. In 2018, the company's staff began a campaign for better wages, especially at Christmas. In November 2020, the company lost around a third of its portfolio which were taken over by Portobello Brewing after their "long term financial partners decided to serve notice upon us to terminate our management relationship for those pubs in which they had an interest".
