Roundhead (fish)
The longfins, also known as roundheads or spiny basslets, are a family, Plesiopidae, which were formerly placed in the order Perciformes or considered indeterminate percomorphs, but are now considered basal blenniiforms. They are elongated fishes, found in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. Classification In some classifications, the genus ''Notograptus'' is split in its own family, Notograptidae, but FishBase is followed here. Crimsontip Longfin
''Plesiops coeruleolineatus'', the crimsontip longfin or coral devil, is a species of fish in the family Plesiopidae. Description ''P. coeruleolineatus'' has an elongated body that grows to a length of . Although colours vary, it is generally has a black or brown body, with two dark stripes behind the eye. The dorsal spines are tipped with orange or red, bordered below with a line white. It has a bluish stripe running along the basal part of the dorsal fin. Distribution The crimsontip longfin is widely found in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa, east to the Samoa Islands, Oceania, and southern Japan, and south to Australia at Queensland. Leonard Jenyns
Leonard Jenyns (25 May 1800 – 1 September 1893) was an English clergyman, author and naturalist. He was forced to take on the name Leonard Blomefield to receive an inheritance. He is chiefly remembered for his detailed phenology observations of the times of year at which events in natural history occurred. Personal life Jenyns was born in 1800 at No. 85 Pall Mall, London, the home of his maternal grandfather. He was the youngest son of George Leonard Jenyns of Bottisham Hall, Cambridgeshire, a magistrate, landowner and a prebendary of Ely Cathedral. His mother Mary (1763–1832) was the daughter of William Heberden (1710–1801). His father had inherited the Bottisham Hall property on the death of his distant cousin Soame Jenyns (1704–1787). Paraplesiops
''Paraplesiops'' is a genus containing five largely Allopatric speciation, allopatric species of fishes in the longfin, or roundhead, family Plesiopidae, commonly known as blue devils, bluedevils, or blue devilfish because of their colouration. The genus is most similar to the tropical genera ''Plesiops'' and ''Fraudella''. It is restricted to subtropical and temperate rocky and coral reefs in Australian waters. Its species are mostly cryptic, occurring in submarine caves, crevices and under rocky ledges. ''Paraplesiops'' often hide unless food is available, they are very friendly fish unless around their prey. They eat small fish or crustaceans. Barton Appler Bean
Barton Appler Bean (May 21, 1860, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania – June 16, 1947, in Chemung, New York) was an American ichthyologist. He was the brother of the ichthyologist Tarleton Hoffman Bean (1846–1916). He obtained a job at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington in 1881, where he worked for his brother. Barton became assistant in 1886 and assistant curator of the Division of Fishes in 1890. He retained this position until his retirement in 1932. Henry Weed Fowler (March 23, 1878 – June 21, 1965) was an American zoologist born in Holmesburg, Philadelphia, Holmesburg, Pennsylvania. He studied at Stanford University under David Starr Jordan. He joined the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and worked as an assistant from 1903 to 1922, associate curator of vertebrates from 1922 to 1934, curator of fish and reptiles from 1934 to 1940 and curator of fish from 1940 to 1965. He published material on numerous topics including crustaceans, birds, reptiles and amphibians, but his most important work was on fish. In 1927 he co-founded the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and acted as treasurer until the end of 1927. Allan Riverstone McCulloch (20 June 1885 – 1 September 1925) was a prominent Australian ichthyologist. Born in Sydney, Australia, McCulloch began his scientific career at the age of 13 as an unpaid assistant to Edgar Ravenswood Waite in the Australian Museum where Waite encouraged McCulloch to study zoology. Three years later, he was employed as a "mechanical assistant", and five years after that, as curator of fishes, a post he held until his death. McCulloch collected and published prolifically; from his first paper in 1906 (published in ''Records of the Australian Museum''), no year passed without his making a contribution to science, and he wrote over 100 original papers in all, many including his own illustrations.
