Rory Gamble
Rory Gamble (born 1956) is an American factory worker and trade unionist. In November 2019, Gamble became the acting president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor, Gary Jones. Jones was charged with and later convicted on fraud charges. He became the first African-American president of the UAW approximately one month after the conclusion of the 2019 General Motors strike. Because of the scandal which brought him to the position of president, UAW faced a potential federal takeover, which he was able to avoid by agreeing to financial safeguards and a court-appointed monitor to oversee operations for six years as well as direct election of UAW officers by membership. United Auto Workers
The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, better known as the United Auto Workers (UAW), is an American labor union that represents workers in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada. It was founded as part of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the 1930s and grew rapidly from 1936 to the 1950s. The union played a major role in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party under the leadership of Walter Reuther (president 1946–1970). It was known for gaining high wages and pensions for auto workers, but it was unable to unionize auto plants built by foreign-based car makers in the South after the 1970s, and it went into a steady decline in membership; reasons for this included increased automation, decreased use of labor, movements of manufacturing (including reaction to NAFTA), and increased globalization. Gary Jones (unionist)
Gary Jones (born September 1956) is a former American labor union leader, who was convicted of embezzlement. Jones began working as a furnace operator for the Ford Motor Company in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in 1975. There, he joined the United Auto Workers (UAW). He qualified as an accountant, and in 1990, began working in the UAW's accountancy department. He became the union's chief accountant in 1991, and then in 1995 became assistant to the union's secretary-treasurer. In 2004, he was appointed as assistant director of the union's Region 5, covering the west and southwest of the United States, and then became director of the region in 2014. In 2018, Jones was elected as president of the UAW, arguing for the union to be more militant, to work for social justice, and to support local communities. 2019 General Motors Strike
The 2019 General Motors strike began September 15, 2019, with the walkout of 48,000 United Automobile Workers from some 50 plants in the United States. Demands by workers included increased job security, gateway for temporary workers to become permanent, better pay and retaining healthcare benefits. The strike lasted six weeks, and ended when GM conceded to union demands on wage growth and health care costs because the new contract allows GM to close three factories: the Lordstown Assembly plant, the Baltimore plant, and the Warren Transmission plant. The new contract includes agreements that "in-progression" workers now get a faster path to top pay: four years from $17 per hour to $28 per hour rather than eight, $75,000-85,000 assistance packages for workers at the three closing plants, and 4% lump sum wage payments in the first and third years with 3% base wage increases in alternating years. Ray Curry
Ray Curry (born 1965) is an American trade union leader. Since July 2021, Curry has served as President of the United Autoworkers. He was elected by the UAW International Executive Board (IEB), replacing Rory Gamble, who was the first Black president of the union. Curry is the second Black president. Curry had previously served as Secretary-Treasurer from 2018 to 2021.
