Ron Cottrell
Ron Cottrell (born October 11, 1960) is an American basketball coach. He is most known for being the head men's basketball coach at Houston Christian University in Houston, Houston, Texas from 1990 to 2024. After beginning his career as a student assistant on Nolan Richardson's staff at Arkansas, Cottrell took over as Athletic Director and head men's basketball coach at Houston Christian, then known as Houston Baptist. From 1998 to 2007, the Huskies made the NAIA men's basketball tournament each season. On December 7, 2021, Cottrell earned his 500th win as a head coach. On March 7, 2024, it was announced that HCU and Cottrell would be parting ways after 34 years. Houston Christian Huskies Men's Basketball
The Houston Christian Huskies men's basketball team, known as the Houston Baptist Huskies until 2022, represents Houston Christian University in Houston, Texas, in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The team is coached by Craig Doty, who was hired on March 15, 2024. The Huskies have appeared once in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 1984. The Huskies competed as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference from 1978 to 1989. After their departure from the TAAC, the Huskies went on a two-year hiatus before returning to the NAIA. HBU competed in the NAIA from 1991 to 2008. They returned to NCAA Division I for the 2008–2009 season, where they were initially an independent, followed by membership in the Great West Conference from 2009 through 2013. 2004 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2004 Buffalo Funds - NAIA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament was held in March at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. This was the 67th annual NAIA DI basketball tournament and featured 32 teams playing in a single-elimination format. This was the third year the tournament was held in Kansas City. The 2004 NAIA national championship game featured the #1 ranked Cougars of Mountain State and the #6 ranked Eagles of Concordia University (CA). This match up was a repeat of the 2003 tournament. The Cougars defeated the Eagles 74–70. The other teams that rounded out the NAIA national semifinals were Georgetown College (KY) and University of Mobile, respectively. The 2012–13 Houston Baptist Huskies men's basketball team represented Houston Baptist University in the 2012–13 college basketball season. This was head coach Ron Cottrell's twenty-second season at HBU. The Huskies played their home games at the Sharp Gymnasium and were members of the Great West Conference. They finished the season 14–17, 3–5 in Great West play to finish in a three way tie for third place. They advanced to the championship game of the Great West tournament where they lost to Chicago State. Great West Conference
The Great West Conference (GWC) was an NCAA college athletic conference in the continental United States. Originally a football-only league, it became an all-sports entity during the 2008–09 season. The GWC stopped sponsoring football following the 2011 season. The conference became defunct when four of the remaining five full member schools became members of other conferences on July 1, 2013. History Cal Poly, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, and UC Davis inaugurated the Great West Football Conference during the 2004 season. NCAA Division I Independent Schools (basketball)
NCAA Division I independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the NCAA Division I level, but do not belong to an established athletic conference for a particular sport. These schools may however still compete as members of an athletic conference in other sports. A school may also be fully independent, and not belong to any athletic conference for any sport at all.
