Romanați County was a county (Romanian language, Romanian: ''județ'') in the Kingdom of Romania, in southeastern part of the historical region of Oltenia. The county seat was Caracal, Romania, Caracal. The county was located in the southwestern part of Romania, in the southeastern part of Oltenia. The county was bordered on the west by Dolj County, to the north by Vâlcea County, to the east by the counties of Olt County, Olt and Teleorman County, Teleorman, and to the south by the Kingdom of Bulgaria. Its territory now comprises the south-eastern part of the current Dolj County, the central-southern part of the current Olt County, and a small part in the southwestern part (around Islaz) of Teleorman County. The county was disbanded with the administrative reform of 6 September 1950. ''Agerpres'' (stylised in all caps; ) is the national news agency of Romania. History ''Agerpres'' is the oldest Romanian news agency and the first autonomous agency in Romania. It was established in March 1889 at the initiative of Foreign Minister Petre P. Carp, as the Telegraph Agency of Romania or Romanian Agency with serving as a "fast and accurate service of all general or special interest news". The Telegraph Agency of Romania was suspended from the end of 1916 until the end of World War I. Balș () is a town in Olt County, Oltenia, Romania. The town administers three villages: Corbeni, Româna, and Teiș. Geography The town is situated on the Wallachian Plain and lies on the banks of the river Olteț. It is located in the northwestern part of the county, on the border with Dolj County, west of the county seat, Slatina, Romania, Slatina. Corabia () is a small Danube port located in Olt County, Oltenia, Romania, which used to be part of the now-dissolved Romanați County before World War II. Across the Danube from Corabia lies the Bulgarian village of Gigen. History Beneath Corabia, around the former village of Celei, lie the remains of Sucidava, an ancient Dacians, Dacian and Roman Dacia, Daco-Roman town and fortress. Near the town, Emperor Constantine the Great built the longest European bridge over the Danube (). The bridge was destroyed during the Avar invasions, probably in the 7th century. The ruins also contain an old Roman bath and an old basilica.
