The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares () is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Spain. Its episcopal see is Alcalá de Henares. The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Madrid. History An ancient diocese of ''Complutum'' (the current Alcala de Henares) was founded in the 4th or 5th century but it was abolished under the Muslim government (8th–11th century) and not restored by the Christian Kings and its territory given to the Archdiocese of Toledo. In 1885, a Diocese of Madrid and Alcala (suffragan of Toledo) was founded, now the Archdiocese of Madrid. On July 23, 1991, it was established as Diocese of Alcalá de Henares from the Archdiocese of Madrid (as its suffragan diocese), with the latin name of ''Complutensis'' to remember the ancient diocese. Alcalá De Henares Cathedral
The Magistral Cathedral of Saint Justus and Saint Pastor (Spanish: ''Catedral de los Santos Niños Justo y Pastor'') is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Together with Saint Peter's of Leuven, they are the only churches worldwide to hold the title of Magistral, as their canons are required to be doctors in Theology. The archbishop Carrillo (1446-1482) elevated the church to the rank of collegiate church. The current building was designed during the time of Cardinal Cisneros (1495-1517) he was awarded the title of "Master" and the current building was designed and constructed between 1497 and 1516 in late Gothic style typical of the age. An ecclesiastical province is one of the basic forms of jurisdiction in Christian churches, including those of both Western Christianity and Eastern Christianity, that have traditional hierarchical structures. An ecclesiastical province consists of several dioceses (or eparchies), one of them being the archdiocese (or archeparchy), headed by a metropolitan bishop or archbishop who has ecclesiastical jurisdiction over all other bishops of the province. World Youth Day
World Youth Day (WYD) is an event for the youth organized by the Catholic Church that was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. Its concept has been influenced by the Light-Life Movement that has existed in Poland since the 1960s, where during summer camps Catholic young adults over 13 days of camp celebrated a "day of community". For the first celebration of WYD in 1986, bishops were invited to schedule an annual youth event to be held every Palm Sunday in their dioceses. Nicknamed "The Catholic Woodstock", it is celebrated at the diocesan level annually—in most places on Palm Sunday from 1986 to 2020, and from 2021 on Christ the King Sunday—and at the international level every two to four years at different locations. Manuel Ureña Pastor (born 4 March 1945) is a Spanish prelate of the Catholic Church who became a bishop in 1988 and served as ordinary in Ibiza, Alcalá de Henares, and Cartagena before becoming Archbishop of Zaragoza, the position he held from 2005 until he retired in 2014. He resigned citing health problems, though later reports demonstrated his mishandling of a charge of harassment against one of his priests. Biography Manuel Ureña Pastor was born in Albaida, Valencia, on 4 March 1945. He attended the Escuela Nacional de Albaida from 1951 to 1959 and then entered the Metropolitan Seminary of Valencia in Moncada. He earned his licentiate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca in 1973. He was ordained a priest on 14 July 1973 in Valencia. The Metropolitan Archdiocese of Madrid () is a Latin archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Spain. It is one of Spain's fourteen metropolitan archbishoprics. Complutum was an ancient Rome, ancient Roman city located in the present-day city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It has been partially excavated and the impressive remains can be seen today at the Complutum archaeological site south west of the current city, about a kilometre from the medieval centre. History The town grew up at a favourable site near the junction of several communication routes and near natural resources, such as the Henares river and the arable meadows around it. A suffragan bishop is a type of bishop in some Christian denominations.
