Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina
Rolando Rodriguez Lobaina (was born 3 May 1969, in Baracoa, Guantánamo), is a Cuban democracy activist and Journalist. Lobainais director of the Alternative Studies Center of the Cuban Youth for Democracy Movement, founded by his brother Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina. Lobaina is also head of the Palenque Vision, an independent journalist agency in Oriente Province, Cuba. Biography A computer engineer graduate from the CUJAE University in Havana, Lobaina joined the opposition movement in Cuba in 1996 as part of the Youth for Democracy group. Since then, he joined and founded different dissident movements . Lobaina spent six years in a Cuban prison. He has been arrested many times but released under international pressure. May 1, 2009, he was arrested again. Baracoa
Baracoa, whose full original name is: ''Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa'' ("Our Lady of the Assumption of Baracoa"), is a municipality and city in Guantánamo Province near the eastern tip of Cuba. It was visited by Admiral Christopher Columbus on November 27, 1492, and then founded by the first governor of Cuba, the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar on August 15, 1511. It is the oldest Spanish settlement in Cuba and was its first capital (the basis for its nickname ''Ciudad Primada'', "First City"). Geography Baracoa is located on the spot where Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba on his first voyage. It is thought that the name stems from the indigenous Taíno language word meaning "the presence of the sea". Guantánamo
Guantánamo (, , ) is a municipality and city in southeast Cuba and capital of Guantánamo Province. Guantánamo is served by the Caimanera port near the site of a U.S. naval base. The area produces sugarcane and cotton wool. These are traditional parts of the economy. History The city was founded in 1797 in the area of a farm named ''Santa Catalina''. The toponym "Guantánamo" means, in Taíno language, "land between the rivers". Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina
Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina is a Cuban democracy activist. He is the older brother of Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina. He founded the Alternative Studies Center of the Cuban Youth for Democracy Movement. He was arrested in 1999 when he began a hunger strike in support of the Tamarindo 34 hunger strikers. He was arrested again in 2000 and sentenced to 6 years in prison. Oriente Province
Oriente (, "East") was the easternmost province of Cuba until 1976. The term "Oriente" is still used to refer to the eastern part of the country, which currently is divided into five different provinces. The origins of Oriente lie in the 1607 division of Cuba into a western and eastern administration. The eastern part was governed from Santiago de Cuba and it was subordinate to the national government in Havana. In 1807, Cuba was divided into three ''departamentos'': Occidental, Central and Oriental. This arrangement lasted until 1851, when the central department was merged back into the West. In 1878, Cuba was divided into six provinces. Oriente remained intact but was officially renamed to Santiago de Cuba Province until the name was reverted to Oriente in 1905.
