''Rokk í Reykjavík'' () is a documentary directed by Icelandic Friðrik Þór Friðriksson during the Icelandic winter of 1981-1982 and released for the local television in 1982. With this documentary, Friðriksson showcases the alternative music scene through several performances of the post-punk/New wave music, new wave most important bands at that time, taken from different concerts and sometimes accompanied by short interviews with musicians. The documentary portrays the lifestyle of young Icelanders opposing the establishment and advocating anarchy, as they try to find their own identity. Friðrik Þór Friðriksson
Friðrik Þór Friðriksson (born 12 May 1954; pronounced ), sometimes credited as Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, is an Icelandic film director and producer. Biography Fridriksson started his film making career with experimental films and documentaries in the early 1980s. In 1987, he founded The Icelandic Film Corporation that became Iceland's most important film production company. The company produces his films and works with other Icelandic directors as well as producers. His international reputation led the company to build a network of internationally well-established co-production partner companies, including Lars von Trier's Zentropa and Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope. He made his debut as a film director with '' Skytturnar'' (''White Whales'') in 1987. ''Screaming Masterpiece'' (''Gargandi snilld'' in Icelandic) is a 2005 documentary film directed and written by Ari Alexander Ergis Magnússon about the music scene in Iceland. It attempts to explore the reasons why Iceland has such a rich variety of musical talent. The film itself shows mostly live performances and interviews by some of Iceland's biggest musicians, including Björk, Sigur Rós, Slowblow, múm, Ghostigital, Quarashi, Singapore Sling amongst others, over the backdrop of Icelandic scenery. Bad Taste (known as Smekkleysa in Icelandic, literally ''Tastelessness'') is an Icelandic independent record label located in Reykjavík, that also publishes poetry books, short films, greeting cards and Icelandic gifts. It is home to The Sugarcubes. History After the bankruptcy of Gramm Records, and the demise of Kukl, Einar Örn Benediktsson, one of the vocalists of Kukl and Ásmundur Jónsson from Gramm, with some of the former musicians from Kukl and members of surrealistic group called Medúsa, convened to create a record company called Smekkleysa in 1986. Later, it was renamed to its English translation, ''Bad Taste'', after Pablo Picasso's manifesto: "Good taste and frugality are the enemies of creativity". The soundtrack, which was released in April 1982 as a 2 LP released through Hugrenningur, features the performances of several Icelandic bands of the post-punk/ new wave scene. Bands such as Þeyr, Tappi Tíkarrass (a band led by singer Björk), Purrkur Pillnikk (with Einar Örn Benediktsson as the front-man), among others, were considered some of the most important bands at the moment. The image cover for this release is a picture of singer Björk performing with Tappi Tíkarrass. The record sold over 2000 copies. Þursaflokkurinn
Þursaflokkurinn (English: the group of hobgoblins), often written in a simplified way ("Thursaflokkurinn"), were an Icelandic progressive rock group that was mainly active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Similar to the Dutch band Focus, Þursaflokkurinn combined rock music with influences of classical music and jazz, enhancing their sound by adding elements of Scandinavian folk music and sometimes eccentric vocals resembling the Rock in Opposition work of, for instance, the Swedish band Samla Mammas Manna. Since their foundation in Reykjavík in 1978, the group consisted of Egill Ólafsson (vocals, keyboards) and acoustic guitar, guitarist Þórður Arnason, bassoonist Rúnar Vilbergsson, bassist Tómas Magnús Tómasson and drummer Ásgeir Óskarsson.
