Rockhouse, Texas
Rockhouse, also Rock House, is an unincorporated community in Austin County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History The community in what is now known as Rockhouse today was first settled in the late 1850s. German immigrant Victor Witte, from Hanover, built a house made out of stone at La Bahia Prairie on the Pastoren Creek headwaters. More settlers from Germany arrived and the community became known as Rockhouse. A post office was established at Rockhouse in 1871 and remained in operation until 1907. The community originally lay in neighboring Fayette County, but a boundary change moved it into Austin County. It began to decline when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railway bypassed the community in the 1890s. It had 25 residents and only one business in 1936. In addition to Bellville, the district also serves the city of Industry as well as rural areas in northern Austin County. Industry, Texas
Industry is a town in Austin County, Texas, United States, at the junction of State Highway 159 (SH 159) and Farm to Market Road 109 (FM 109). The population was 268 at the 2020 census. Industry was the first permanent German settlement in Texas. Friedrich Ernst, Industry's founder, settled here in 1831 and gained Industry the title "Cradle of German Settlement in Texas" (see German Texan). The community was so named on account of the industrious character of the first settlers. Texas State Highway 159
State Highway 159 (SH 159) is a Texas state highway that runs from La Grange to Fayetteville in Fayette County, through Industry and Bellville in Austin County, and ends at Hempstead in Waller County. The route was designated on March 19, 1930 from SH 73 east to Hempstead as a renumbering of SH 73A. On December 8, 1932, it was extended west to northeast of La Grange, replacing part of SH 73, which had been rerouted further south earlier. On September 26, 1939, SH 159 was extended to La Grange, replacing part of SH 237. Route description SH 159 begins at Bus. SH 71 in downtown La Grange and heads northeast.
