Rochester Jr. Americans (1999–2000)
The Rochester Jr. Americans were a Tier II junior ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). History The Rochester Americans the oldest profession ice hockey team in upstate New York, began sponsoring a junior club in the NAHL in 1999. This was at least the third time the Americans had supported a 'Jr. American' squad with two previous attempts playing in the Northeastern Junior Hockey League and the Golden Horseshoe Junior Hockey League. Donald Kirnan was hired to coach the team but, as typical for an expansion franchise, the Jr. Americans had very little success and finished last in the standings. Rochester Americans
The Rochester Americans (colloquially known as the Amerks) are a professional ice hockey team based in Rochester, New York. They are the American Hockey League affiliate of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. The team plays its home games at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial. The Americans are the fourth oldest franchise in the AHL, and have the second longest continuous tenure among AHL teams in their current locations after the Hershey Bears. Rochester was awarded a new franchise in June 1956, when the Pittsburgh Hornets were forced to suspend operations after their arena, the Duquesne Gardens was razed in an urban renewal project. The 1999–2000 NAHL season was the 16th season of the North American Hockey League. The season ran from September 1999 to April 2000 with a 56-game schedule for each team. Thomas Vanek (born 19 January 1984) is an Austrian former professional ice hockey winger who played fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, and Vancouver Canucks. Stephen Michael Gionta (born October 9, 1983) is an American former professional ice hockey centre. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. Gionta is the younger brother of Brian Gionta, who played for the Devils from 2001 to 2009. Playing career As a youth, Gionta played in the 1997 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Rochester, New York. Gionta was not drafted by any team. However, after graduating from Boston College he signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Albany River Rats. The Golden Horseshoe Junior Hockey League (GHL) was a junior ice hockey league in Ontario, Canada, sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Association from 1974 until 2007. In 2007, the league became a division of the newly formed Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League along with the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League and Western Ontario Hockey League.
