Robert Thorburn (politician)
Sir Robert Thorburn (March 28, 1836 – April 12, 1906) was a British-born Newfoundlander merchant and politician who served as the Premier of Newfoundland Colony from 1885 to 1889. Life Born in Scotland, Thorburn emigrated to Newfoundland in 1852 when he was sixteen. From 1870 to 1885 and again from 1893 to 1906 he was a member of the colony's appointed Legislative Council, the Upper House of Newfoundland's parliament. Thorburn was an opponent of Sir William Whiteway's plans to build a cross-Newfoundland railway as a means of diversifying and industrialising the economy. Thorburn, a leading merchant, argued that the colony should be developed along strict commercial lines based on the fisheries. Traditionally, Newfoundland politics had been divided along sectarian lines with Catholics supporting the Liberals and Protestants supporting the Conservative Party of Newfoundland. Robert Thorburn, (1818–1885) was a Scottish Portrait miniature, miniature-painter and associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy.Cust 1898, p. 280. Life Robert Thorburn, born at Dumfries in March 1818, was the son of a tradesman. He received his early education at Dumfries High School. He soon developed a love of art, and, owing to the kindness of a neighbouring lady, was at the age of fifteen sent to Edinburgh to draw at the Edinburgh College of Art, Academy, where he made rapid progress and gained distinction. About three years later he came to London and entered the classes of the Royal Academy. As a native of Dumfries he enjoyed the special patronage of the Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch, Duke of Buccleuch, whereby he obtained many commissions. Thorburn's success as a miniature-painter was soon secured, and for many years he shared the patronage of fashionable society with Sir William Charles Ross. Robert Thorburn (cricketer)
Robert Murray Thorburn (22 March 1883 – 8 May 1943) was a Scottish first-class cricketer. The son of Colonel William Thorburn, he was born at Peebles in March 1883 and was educated at Blair Lodge School in Falkirk. Thorburn volunteered in the 6th Battalion, Royal Scots, being commissioned as a second lieutenant in May 1903. He proceeded to be appointed to the 8th Battalion in November 1908, with the rank of lieutenant, before resigning his commission in January 1909. He later served in the Royal Scots during the First World War, being appointed a second lieutenant in August 1914, with promotion to lieutenant coming in June 1916. In July 1917, he was promoted to captain, which was antedated to June 1916. He resigned his commission in February 1921, retaining the rank of captain. A club cricketer for Peebles County, he made a single appearance in first-class cricket for Scotland against Wales at Swansea in 1924.
