The Robert Sangster Stakes, is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred Weight for Age horse race for fillies and mares two (2) years old and upwards, over a distance of 1200 metres at the Morphettville Racecourse Adelaide, Australia in the Autumn Carnival. Prize money is A$1,000,000 History The race was held in February prior to 2006. After rescheduling of the Adelaide Cup Carnival the SAJC moved the race to the autumn. In 2005 the race was renamed the Robert Sangster Stakes after prolific owner and breeder Robert Sangster who died in 2004. Robert Sangster was the principal of Swettenham Stud and the renaming recognises his contribution to the Australian thoroughbred industry. Alinghi (horse)
Alinghi (20 August 2001 – 23 October 2017) was an Australian Thoroughbred racemare who won four Group One races, including the Newmarket Handicap, and earned A$4,161,740 in total prize money. She was by the leading sire, Encosta De Lago from Oceanfast by Monde Bleu (GB). Oceanfast's racing record was 12 starts for 2 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds for $82,760 and Alinghi is her only stakes winner until July 2009. Alinghi was trained by Lee Freedman. She is one of the few fillies to win the Newmarket Handicap as a three-year-old. The time-honoured Newmarket Handicap is one of the best sprint race in Australia. Platelet (foaled 2 November 2008) was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. Platelet is a retired multiple Group 1 winning mare who was trained by Ballarat-based trainer Darren Weir who during her racing career won $1,396,250. Her consistency was highlighted winning 10 races with a further 9 second placing out of only 32 starts. The highlight of her career was winning the Group 1 South Australian Robert Sangster – Goodwood sprint double which only the champion Black Caviar has been able to achieve. Shoals is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare trained and bred in Australia. She won three Group One races and over two and half million dollars over her career. Career Shoals made her debut on 21 February 2017 at Seymour, winning by 4 lengths. 4 weeks later, she won the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes. Opening with bookies at $7, she was backed into $2.70 by the start of the race, winning by half a length. Travelling to Sydney for the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes, Shoals was a "well supported" favourite in a "gritty win", coming from 2nd last down the straight to win by a half head. Trainer Anthony Freedman said, "She's a very tenacious filly. I don't think she really handled the ground all that well but she just has a great will to win." Snapdancer (foaled 16 August 2016) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred by Coolmore Stud, Snapdancer was sold for A$180,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions yearling sale. She was purchased by Spicer Thoroughbreds/Darren Weir Racing. Racing career Snapdancer did not start in a race until she was a three-year-old when finishing second in a maiden at Pakenham on the 1 August 2019. She won her first race just three weeks later at the Ballarat race course. As a five-year-old, Snapdancer was successful in the 2022 Magic Millions for Fillies and Mares, when ridden by James McDonald. Cheltenham Park Racecourse
Cheltenham Park Racecourse was a horse racing track located in the suburb of Cheltenham, South Australia, Cheltenham in Adelaide, South Australia, between around 1921 and 2009. History The Port Adelaide Racing Club began thoroughbred racing at the course and in 1921 the club bought the site on which the course stands for £25,000. Administration of the course was taken over by the South Australian Jockey Club in 1975. Adelaide Cup
The Adelaide Cup is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 2 Thoroughbred handicap horse race for three-year-olds and older, run over 3,200 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia on the second Monday in March. Total prize money for the race is A$350,000. History The first Adelaide Cup was raced on 21 April 1864 at Thebarton Racecourse, where Mile End is today. The race had stakes of 500 sovereigns with an additional sweep of 50 sovereigns to induce owners from other colonies to compete in the race. Victoria's P. Dowling's Falcon carried 10 stone, 1 pound () and ridden by jockey J. Morrison won the race in a time of 3:50.50. A crowd of 7,000 or 8,000 was present for the event.
