Rijswijk, North Brabant
Rijswijk is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Altena, about 5 km southeast of Gorinchem. History The village was first mentioned in the 12th century as Riswic, the name being a combination of neighbourhood and twigs. Slotje Rijswijk is a castle which probably dated from the 14th century. It used to have a tower, however it has been demolished. In 1760, an estate was built on the location, using the foundations of the former castle. The Dutch Reformed church was originally built before 1369. Remains have been discovered of a church dating from around 1100. In 1809, it was destroyed by a flood, replaced by a new church, and restored in 1999 and 2000. Rijswijk was home to 306 people in 1840. Rijswijk was a separate municipality until 1973, when it became part of Woudrichem. Rijswijk and neighbouring Giessen have grown into a single urban area. North Brabant ( ; ), also unofficially called Brabant, Dutch Brabant or Hollandic Brabant, is a province in the south of the Netherlands. Altena, North Brabant
Altena is a municipality in the Netherlands, on a river island in the very north of the province of North Brabant, bordering the provinces of Gelderland and South Holland. Nearby cities are Dordrecht in the west, Gorinchem in the north (both in South Holland), and Waalwijk in the south. Approximately 56,000 people live in an area of about 201 km², making Altena the largest municipality of North Brabant in terms of land area (surpassing Meierijstad). Woudrichem
Woudrichem (; Brabantian: ''Woerkum'') is a city and former municipality in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. History Woudrichem originated in the ninth century. A marketplace emerged on a riverbank where Hoogstraat and Molenstraat are now located. Around the year 1000, several settlements, mostly north of the Alm, appeared and were centered around Woudrichem. Initially, the Maas did not flow past Woudrichem. The main course of this river first flowed approximately through the bed of the current Bergsche Maas; later, the Alm was the main course, and later still, the current Afgedamde Maas, until the Bergsche Maas was dug in 1904. Giessen is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Altena, about 7 km southeast of Gorinchem. History The village was first mentioned in 1178 as Giscen. It is named after a river, however the etymology is unclear. Giessen developed in the Middle Ages along the Afgedamde Maas.
