Richmond District, San Francisco
The Richmond District is a neighborhood in the northwest corner of San Francisco, on the West Side (San Francisco), West Side of the city. Developed initially in the late 19th century. It is sometimes confused with the city of Richmond, California, Richmond, which is northeast of San Francisco; accordingly, the neighborhood usually is referred to as "the Richmond." The Richmond is bordered by Golden Gate Park on the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Lincoln Park (San Francisco), Lincoln Park, Mountain Lake Park and the Presidio of San Francisco to the north, bisected by the Presidio Greenbelt. List Of Neighborhoods In San Francisco
San Francisco, in the US state of California, has both major, well-known neighborhoods and districts as well as smaller, specific subsections and developments. While there is considerable fluidity among the sources, one guidebook identifies five major districts, corresponding to the four quadrants plus a south central district. These five broad districts, counterclockwise are: Central/downtown, Richmond, Sunset, Upper Market and beyond (south central) and Bernal Heights/Bayview and beyond (southeast). Within each of these five districts are located major neighborhoods, and again there is considerable fluidity seen in the sources. Ohlone
The Ohlone ( ), formerly known as Costanoans (from Spanish meaning 'coast dweller'), are a Native Americans in the United States, Native American people of the Northern California coast. Outside Lands
Outside Lands was the name used in the 19th century for the present-day Richmond District and Sunset District on the West Side of San Francisco. With few roads and no public transportation, the area was covered by sand dunes and was considered inaccessible and uninhabitable. Today, after extensive development, the area consists of Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, and well-developed neighborhoods. A dune is a landform composed of wind- or water-driven sand. It typically takes the form of a mound, ridge, or hill. An area with dunes is called a dune system or a dune complex. Eric Lee Mar (born August 15, 1962) is an American politician. He served on the San Francisco Board of Education and San Francisco County Democratic Central Committee. In 2008, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He represented District 1. Mountain Lake Park
Mountain Lake Park is a park located in Richmond District on the West Side of San Francisco. Situated north of the intersection of Lake and Funston, the park was designed by engineer William Hammond Hall in the late 19th century (circa 1875). Hall also designed Golden Gate Park and was significantly influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted. History Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza ended his second northward expedition at the lake, stopping for two days in 1776. While here he located a site for the Spanish presidio that was later built. A plaque was placed in September 1957 near the point where he stayed. Fill taken from the cut to build the MacArthur Tunnel was dumped near Mountain Lake during the construction of the Funston Avenue approach to the Golden Gate Bridge in 1939. Lincoln Park (San Francisco)
Lincoln Park is a park located on the West Side of San Francisco, California. It was dedicated to president Abraham Lincoln in 1909 and includes about of the northwestern corner of the San Francisco Peninsula. Lincoln Park park hosts the Legion of Honor Museum of art and is the western terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first automobile roadway across the United States. History The land on which Lincoln Park stands was the city-owned Golden Gate Cemetery, established in 1868. It held about 10,000 remains and included a Chinese burial ground and a potter's field. In 1902, golf enthusiasts laid out a three-hole course on part of the land. In 1909, the Board of Supervisors turned the land over to the Parks Commission, and cemetery relocation began.
