Richardson House (Brunswick, Maine)
The Richardson House, also known as the Captain George McManus House, is a historic house at 11 Lincoln Street in Brunswick, Maine. Built in 1857, it is a fine local example of transitional Greek Revival-Italianate architecture in brick. McManus, for whom it was built, was a prominent local ship's captain. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. For a time, it housed the museum of the Pejepscot Historical Society. Description and history The Richardson House stands on the south side of Lincoln Street, just west of the town's business district. It is a two-story brick building with a hip roof and a granite foundation. The roof cornice is broad and studded with irregularly spaced Italianate brackets, with a line of dentil moulding. The street-facing facade is three bays wide, with all windows, with the Colonial Revival entrance set in a projection to the left, under a flat-roofed porch supported by square paneled pillars. The Lincoln Street Historic District in Brunswick, Maine, is an historic district encompassing a remarkably uniform assemblage of mid 19th-century residential construction. It includes fourteen houses, most of which were built in a two-year period between 1843 and 1845. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Description and history Lincoln Street is an east-west residential street, one block in length, extending west from Maine Street (Maine State Route 24), Brunswick's principal downtown thoroughfare. The land on which it was laid out was acquired over a multi-year period by Dr. Isaac Lincoln, a professor at Bowdoin College's Maine Medical School for many years. In response to local demand for housing, Lincoln subdivided the land and sold off most of the lots in 1843. The Pejepscot Historical Society, known as the Pejepscot History Center, is the fourth oldest historical society in the state of Maine.
