Richard Smyth (theologian)
Richard Smyth (or Smith) (1499/1500, Worcestershire, England – 9 July 1563, Douai, France) was the first person to hold the office of Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Oxford and the first Chancellor of the University of Douai. Life Educated at Merton College, Oxford, and taking his MA degree in 1530, he became Registrar of the University of Oxford in 1532 then (by royal appointment) its first Regius Professor of divinity in 1536. Taking his doctorate in divinity on 10 July 1536, he was subsequently made master of Whittington College, London, rector of St Dunstan-in-the-East and then Cuxham, Oxfordshire, principal of St Alban's Hall, Oxford, and divinity reader at Magdalen College. Some (possibly unreliable) accounts have him renouncing Catholicism and the authority of the Pope at Oxford and (on 15 May 1547) at St Paul's Cross on the accession of the Protestant Edward VI. Richard Smyth (minister)
Richard Smyth (4 October 1826 – 4 December 1878) was a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and politician. Life Smyth, son of Hugh Smyth of Bushmills, County Antrim, by Sarah Anne, daughter of J. Wray, was born at Dervock, County Antrim, on 4 October 1826. He was educated at the University of Bonn and at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated M.A. in 1850, and received the honorary D.D. and LL.D. degrees in 1867. For eight years he was assistant-collegiate minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Londonderry, and in 1865 was appointed professor of oriental languages and biblical literature in Magee College, Londonderry. In 1870 he became Dill professor of theology in the same college. He served as Secretary of the College in 1869-70 and as its President in 1873 and 1877-78. Richard Nicholas Paul Smyth (born 27 June 1950) is a former English cricketer. Smyth was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Chichester, Sussex, and was educated at Brighton College. Smyth made his first-class debut for Sussex against Surrey in 1970 County Championship. He made two further first-class appearances for the county, both which came in 1970 against Worcestershire and a tour match against the visiting Jamaicans. In his three first-class appearances, he scored a total of 42 runs at an average of 8.40, with a high score of 25. Smyth made a single List A appearance in that season against Worcestershire in the John Player League, ending Sussex's innings unbeaten on 4, with Worcestershire winning the match by 4 wickets. Richard Smythe
Sir Richard Smythe (1563-1628), of Bromley, Kent and St. Stephen Coleman Street, London; later of Leeds Castle, Kent, was an English Member of Parliament (MP). Family background Richard Smythe was a younger son of Thomas "Customer" Smythe of Westenhanger in Kent, and his wife Alice, a daughter of Sir Andrew Judde. His father was a haberdasher and "customer" of the port of London. Career Educated at the Middle Temple, Smythe bought Leeds Castle in 1599 and carried out substantial rebuilding. He was a Member of the Parliament of England for Heytesbury in 1604, and for Hythe in 1614. Smythe and his elder brother Sir Thomas Smythe were jointly receiver of rents for Duchy of Cornwall from August 1604. He operated a monopoly in the trade of tin from the summer of 1605, partnered by members of the London Pewterer's Company. The project was funded in part by the royal exchequer.
