Richard's Club
Richard's Club was a nightclub and music venue in Lawtell, Louisiana. Proprietor Eddie Richard opened the club in 1947. It was a venue of the Southern Chitlin' Circuit, particularly as a stop between New Orleans and Houston on US Highway 190. Later it became a well known and historically significant zydeco venue. By the late 1990s, the club was regarded as "zydeco's answer to the Grand Ole Opry." The building was described by Rounder producer Scott Billington as "a long, low-ceilinged building that seemed in danger of shaking loose from its foundations when the music got loud and the dancers filled the floor." In 2008, journalist Nathan Stubbs described the club as still having "7-foot high ceilings, the small wooden tables and 1970s bucket chairs, the well-worn uneven wooden floor, the screen windows with no glass. Lawtell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. The name is a portmanteau of the names of its two founders: Lawler and Littell. State Representative Dustin Miller is a native of and a businessman in Lawtell. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has an area of , all land. U.S. Route 190 passes through the community. Demographics As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,198 people living in the CDP. Zydeco Force
Zydeco Force was an American Creole zydeco band from Opelousas, Louisiana, United States. Zydeco Force is best known for its tracks "Hey Madeline" and "B-Flat". History The band consisted of Robby Robinson, Raymond Thomas, and the two sons of Lawtell Playboys frontman Delton Broussard: Shelton and Jeffery Broussard, and Delton's nephew Herbert Broussard. They formed in 1989 and became a regional hit across Louisiana and East Texas. The band was featured in the award-winning German film, ''Schultze Gets the Blues'', filmed in the former East Germany and in Texas and Louisiana. Big Mama Thornton
Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton (December 11, 1926 – July 25, 1984), was an American singer and songwriter of blues and R&B. The ''Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock and Soul'' described Thornton by saying: "Her booming voice, sometimes 200-pound frame, and exuberant stage manner had audiences stomping their feet and shouting encouragement in R&B theaters from coast to coast from the early 1950s on". Thornton was the first to record Leiber and Stoller's " Hound Dog", in 1952, which was written for her. Nathan Williams Sr. (born March 24, 1963) is an American zydeco accordionist, singer and songwriter. He established his band Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas in 1985. Early life Williams grew up Catholic Church, Catholic in a Louisiana Creole, French Creole-speaking home in St. Martinville, Louisiana, the youngest of seven children. Rosie Ledet (born Mary Roszela Bellard; October 25, 1971), also known as Rosie Bellard, is an American Creole Zydeco accordion player and singer. Her songs are known for their sultry and suggestive lyrics. She tours and records with her band, the Zydeco Playboys. Beau Jocque (born Andrus Espre; November 1, 1953 – September 10, 1999) was a Louisiana French Creole zydeco musician and songwriter active in the 1990s. Beau Jocque is known for his gruff vocals, his fusion of many musical styles into zydeco, and above all, for the powerful energy of his rhythm and sound. John Lee Hooker
John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1912 or 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues that he developed in Detroit.
