Lawtell, Louisiana
Lawtell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. The name is a portmanteau of the names of its two founders: Lawler and Littell. State Representative Dustin Miller is a native of and a businessman in Lawtell. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has an area of , all land. U.S. Route 190 passes through the community. Demographics As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,198 people living in the CDP. The racial makeup of the CDP was 49.6% Black, 45.1% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 1.2% from some other race and 1.4% from two or more races. 12.4% were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Richard's Club
Richard's Club was a nightclub and music venue in Lawtell, Louisiana. Proprietor Eddie Richard opened the club in 1947. It was a venue of the Southern Chitlin' Circuit, particularly as a stop between New Orleans and Houston on US Highway 190. Later it became a well known and historically significant zydeco venue. By the late 1990s, the club was regarded as "zydeco's answer to the Grand Ole Opry." The building was described by Rounder producer Scott Billington as "a long, low-ceilinged building that seemed in danger of shaking loose from its foundations when the music got loud and the dancers filled the floor." In 2008, journalist Nathan Stubbs described the club as still having "7-foot high ceilings, the small wooden tables and 1970s bucket chairs, the well-worn uneven wooden floor, the screen windows with no glass. Roy Carrier
Joseph Roy Carrier Sr. (February 11, 1947 – May 3, 2010), known professionally as Roy Carrier, was an American Zydeco musician. He was the father of Chubby and Dikki Du Carrier, who followed their father into Zydeco music and the brother of Zydeco T Carrier Early years Roy Carrier was born February 11, 1947, in rural Louisiana near Lawtell, one of 10 children in a sharecropping family. Carrier's father Warren, himself a Zydeco musician, would play the accordion on weekends at parties and la la dances. When Carrier was 6 years old, he began to accompany his father to these events, and would play along with him on the frottoir, or "rubboard". Creole Music
The term Creole music () is used to refer to two distinct musical traditions: art songs adapted from 19th-century vernacular music; or the vernacular traditions of Louisiana Creole people which have persisted as 20th- and 21st-century la la and zydeco in addition to influencing Cajun music. Early development In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory, including New Orleans, from France. In 1809 and 1810, more than 10,000 refugees from the West Indies arrived in New Orleans, most originally from French-speaking Haiti. Of these, about 3,000 were freed slaves. Creole folk songs originated on the plantations of the French and Spanish colonists of Louisiana. Calvin Carrière
Calvin Carriére (September 10, 1921 – March 3, 2002) was an American, Creole fiddler, who played zydeco music. He was styled the 'King Of Zydeco Fiddle'. Carriére was born in Lawtell, Louisiana, United States. He learned fiddle from his Uncle Joseph "Bébé" Carrière (b. 1908) and accordion from his father Eraste 'Dolon' Carriere (b. 1900). They learned from their father Ernest. The Creole and La-la music he played with his father and uncle: "The Carriere Brothers". Over 18 years this developed into the Zydeco band "Delton Broussard and the Lawtell Playboys". Carriére recalled: "We used to work in the fields and every Sunday Delton would sit on the porch and take lessons from my daddy." Zydeco
Zydeco ( ; ) is a music genre that was created in rural Southwest Louisiana by French speaking, Afro-Americans of Creole heritage. It blends African and Caribbean rhythms, blues and rhythm and blues with music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles, such as la la and juré. The main instruments are accordion and a zydeco rubboard, washboard, scrubboard or vest frottoir. Characteristics Zydeco music is typically played in an uptempo, syncopated manner with a strong rhythmic core, and often incorporates elements of blues, rock and roll, soul music, R&B, and early Creole music. Zydeco music is centered on the accordion, which leads the rest of the band, and a specialized washboard, called a vest frottoir, as a prominent percussive instrument.
