Rice, Oregon
Rice is an unincorporated community in Wasco County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is about northeast of Dufur, near Boyd and U.S. Route 197. Rice was named for Horace Rice, who settled on upper Fifteenmile Creek in the 1860s and who planted the first crop of wheat in upland Wasco County. Fifteenmile Creek (Columbia River)
Fifteenmile Creek is a long tributary of the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Oregon. It drains of Hood River and Wasco counties. Arising in the Cascade Range near Mount Hood, it flows northeast then west to its confluence with the Columbia near The Dalles. It was named "fifteenmile" because in pioneer days the main road crossed the creek about from The Dalles. Course Fifteenmile Creek's headwaters are near Lookout Mountain in the Cascade Range, east of Mount Hood. It flows northeast, crossing into Wasco County and gathering small tributaries such as Ramsey Creek and Pine Creek. Traveling through the city of Dufur, the creek is crossed by Highway 197. Fifteenmile Creek receives Dry Creek on the right downstream of Dufur, turning north. It then flows west, receiving Eightmile Creek on the left while paralleling the Columbia River. Great Southern Railroad
The Great Southern Railroad was a 41-mile short-line which interchanged with the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, later the Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company (OWR&N), in The Dalles, Oregon, United States. The rail line ran south along Fifteen Mile Creek through Boyd to Dufur, and on to the small community of Friend. Besides the railhead junction with OWR&N, the Great Southern also had connections with two steamship line operating on the Columbia River; The Dalles, Portland & Astoria Navigation Co., and The Open River Transportation Co. Boyd, Oregon
Boyd was a town in Wasco County, Oregon, United States, disincorporated in 1955, and now vacant except for a few abandoned homes, weathered outbuildings, and a derelict wooden grain elevator surrounded by the wheat fields, which still produce the grain that used to fill it. The site was recently bought and turned into farmland. The site of the former settlement is southeast of The Dalles, on the east side of U.S. Route 197 from which it is visible at a distance. Dufur is a city in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 604 at the 2010 census. It is a farming community where wheat, tree fruit, and grapes are important crops. History Dufur was incorporated on February 10, 1893, and named after Andrew Dufur and his brother Enoch Burnham Dufur. In 1859 they began raising stock on of land located where the city now stands.
